FACING DOUBLE STANDARDS

Can you imagine the athmosphere when dealing with people in a wide variety of execution but complicated simple task? How could it be done? My first day assignment was at the machinery to pick up materials from a running belt like you see at the grocery stores, the only difference is to pick materials coming from a big turning container to grind recycling materials throwing or dropping. them at big square steel bins infront of the belt could be intriguing. While thinking it is that easy to fill up that bin. In my mind as a neophyte, a new worker at the company what would the supervisor overseeing the production requires me to accomplish? First I must be time conscious, there are how many of us assigned to pick up?We were 5 pickers, one machinist and one forklift operator to change the bins when they are fulI . I was looking into how I would do my task faster than the others. I don't mind others if they would do the same like me and to be very meticulous on the kind of materials making sure the metal is the only kind that is drop in that bin. There are five bins infront of the belt and while picking up I must be attentive when they stop the machine then I would clean up my area. At break time I was led to the canteen where there were about fifty people taking their breaks at the same time coming from many areas of the 2 thousand square feet of working area at this recycling plant. Here I sat with a friend who introduce herself to me earlier in which I was happy with not being familiar where to go. for break. Here comes the lady supervisor and later on, a clean shaven guy came in and seated beside her. My friend Noreen beside me whispered the name of our Day Supervisor is Maureen and the Leadman is Cosme. Oh, they are sharing food and it seemed to me they were a couple. After our break Noreen said I'll go ahead to our area being ordered to drop by the office to sign some papers for her vacation leave. I was not familiar way back to my place but Noreen asked Cory to go with me, one of the pickers we are working with. I asked her how long has she been working with this company. " It is almost 5 years. Do you like it? I asked her,: Of course. she answered, "aside from the full benefits that we receive we have a yearly wage increase. " "That's fantastic" I replied . I remember the work where I came from. We have no benefits no yearly increase but they are nice to me working with their forklift operator especially assigned to help me then I directly received instructions from the company president. My work there was a painter. Painting firelogs to be placed inside the fireplace. I would paint the firelogs that it looks exquisitely like the true natural burning logs. This is the reason the president kept me even if I reached my retirement age to the envy of my co-workers making more money than they are. When I informed the president that I was leaving he asked me if I'm retiring. I said I'm going to work in another company. As if he is pleading, he told me that I'm fully welcome to work with him again if I will not be happy where I'm going. Now that I learned I will receive all benefits with salary increase I put in my mind to do my job very well. The machine is not started yet when we arrived so I took a broom to sweep the dirt under the machine and I noticed the others just stood at the steel platform waiting for the machine operator to start the machine. "Come". they called me when the machine is already running. Before lunch Leadman Cosme came to see how much it is done and I think he has asked the machine operator how I'm doing my work being new and smiling he approached me and said "Good job." he said. I felt elated. Imagine if I could keep this job I will be expecting a bigger income.to bring home looking at fixed income as senior citizens. Now our income will double or even triple.because of the starting rate I was offered. .I got this job applying to an agency that was advertise hiring people temporarily but given permanent position after three months if the performance is high. From today that must be my goal to get the permanent position. After one week of working at the big turning container Leadman Cosme asked me to go to another area. I climbed up a steel stair and the same I have to pick different materials coming from the recycled TV sets, kitchen materials, appliances and computers. This time materials are picked in kind and most materials are left to be filled at the end with big bags of materials to be moved by forklift to be pulverized at another area. Everytime we go for breaks Day Supervisor Maureen would sit with Leadman Cosme. And the same thing that comes to my mind how sweet couple are they. Work went by when the month of December came. I thought of buying Christmas cards for my co-workers and a special gift to my Day Supervisor Maureen. On Christmas Day we have potluck lunch and we were really have a sumptous meal and we exchanged gifts. How could you be caught in big surprise when the card I gave to Leadman Cosme was handed to Liza working at the glass area. Then Noreen approached me having noticed about my shocking discovery, how come Liza has the card that I gave to Leadman Cosme? Noreen explained Liza is the wife of Leadman Cosme. "Oh I see, " I could see Liza passing by my place walking by herself on the next spring and summertime while Leadman Cosme drove their vehicle to work. Coming from a conservative culture it is a big question why a man could hurt his wife everyday not sitting with her at lunchtime or being far from her but closer to Maureen could it be that he got the special favor from her when Leadman Cosme got his promotion to become a Leadman being picked by Day Supervisor Maureen. Many questions ran into my mind and it did not rest until I was assigned to work with Liza. The machine operator gets order from Liza and new hires ask me to do the work for them. I was bewildered of what is going on but I keep my performance on high gear, Every year the company undertake advertising and educational videos and it is now the second year that I was picked to perform my tasks because of my speed and excellent performance in picking and classifying recycled materials When the crew has set the video equipment with big spotlights focused at me and what I was doing the Operations Manager showed up to be taken by the video camera a little distance from me not saying anything at all until they get enough video recording. and he leaves I keep myself every distance that I could from anyone I now. These people are planning a scheme to let me out. Day Supervisor Maureen giving special treatment to Liza and Leadman Cosme, and I receive the same treatment from the Machine Operator to instruct the new ones to let me do something for them telling me to get the broom and sweep around. I would answer " Do it yourself" I think this has reached Day Supervisor Maureen and one day I was asked to go to the Human Resources office and Day Supervisor Maureen was there. The Human Resources Manager read the accusations written but I know they were all false but I signed it anyway. Because the company has an open door policy to hear grievances from its employees I wrote my report and reverse all their accusations and handed it to Day Supervisor Maureen. The Human Resources heard me because one day Liza was sent to the Human Resources and she was sent home on the spot and I didn't see her anymore.
