Romance Holiday LGBTQ+

Perfect. After six years, Dewi wanted today to be perfect! For his boyfriend, Dewi Ambrosia would give the world. And that’s the point. Blake deserves the world for not just tolerating him but actively loving him over these six years of dating. Dewi knew he could be super clingy and high energy. Not to mention high maintenance at times. Blake was a saint for loving him through it all and so actively making sure he was doing okay and being so affectionate.

Perhaps he was also being a bit selfish, but Dewi wanted to ensure his wonderful Blake would stay in his life. The problem was he was so nervous. What if he messed up or Blake said no? Logically he knew Blake wouldn't leave him over it, but…  Dewi decided to have some back up plans in case his nerves got the better of him.

They went out to a nice breakfast at a local coffee shop. “You want to get married someday, Babe?”

“I mean, yeah. Settle down, maybe even start a family…”

“I mean with me.”

“Of course, Dew. That’s usually why one dates a person, because they’re considering wanting to marry them…” Dewi realized he messed up.

After breakfast he tries again while they’re walking through the park. What could be more romantic than Christmas Eve with all the trees decked out in lights? Keep it simple. Get down on one knee and pull out the ring while asking. “Blake, will you…” Shoot, he can’t find the ring. Did he leave it at home? “...Will you help me up? I think I’m stuck.” Blake chuckles as he helps him up.

Ten minutes later, Dewi reaches into his pocket for something and realizes he had just reached for the wrong pocket… There would be other chances, right? Blake starts glancing at his phone every once in a while before suddenly saying they had somewhere to be. Dewi finds himself being led to the stands of an ice rink with a scheduled performance. This would be good, right? They would be sitting for a little while before the show actually starts while others find seats. Make sure to have the right pocket this time, there really isn’t much room to go on one knee but he turns to Blake. “I love you, Blake. Will-” The opening music drowns out the rest of what he was trying to say. Oh, well... Dewi leans against Blake, just enjoying watching the show with him.

His next attempt was a while later. One of his back up plans, in case he became too nervous to talk, was a letter he had in one of his pockets. He could hand it over while they were at lunch and pull out the ring while Blake read it. Simple with just enough romantic flair to be memorable.

Well, it was at least memorable for one of them. Pulling it out while Blake was distracted, Dewi bumps his glass and water spills all over him, soaking the envelope he had in his hand. As much as he tries to save it, the letter is sopping wet and not legible anymore. He feels like he wants to cry. Today is supposed to be one of enjoying each other’s company, though, so he excuses himself to clean up in the bathroom a bit.

When he gets back, Blake looks a bit concerned. “You okay, Dewdrop? You seem out of it a bit today.”

“Of course. Why… why wouldn’t I be?” Dewi smiles. Remember, supposed to be happy… Can’t let Blake think that he isn’t enjoying spending the day together.

“Maybe we should cut the day short and head home. We can go on another date to make it up if you aren’t feeling well.”

“No! It’s Christmas Eve and this is our tradition. And… and we haven’t gone to the mall yet. We can’t go home before getting our traditional hot cocoa and two dozen cookies.” That would be the perfect place to propose. The cafe they always went to for the cookies was the same one Blake took him to their first Christmas Eve together. It held a special meaning to both of them, which is why they go back every year on Christmas Eve.

With hope of another chance, Dewi cheers up. By the time they get to the cafe, Dewi is obviously excited. “I’ll grab us a seat while you get our cookies and drinks, Babe.” Blake knew by now what to get him so Dewi figured he could find a table for them and then get in position. In Dewi’s mind, Blake would come over to him being on one knee and all he’d have to do is ask the question.

Blake does come over with their order to Dewi on his knees, but he isn’t holding a ring. Instead, he’s looking around and under the table. “What’s wrong, my Love?”

Dewi bursts into tears at the question. “I-I’ve been trying all day and now I c-can’t find the ring. Something goes wrong every single time. I checked every pocket I have, I lost the ring to propose…”

“Well,” Blake sets the stuff on the table. “Do you know what’s so great about being in a relationship with you?” Dewi shakes his head, seemingly trying to calm down. “We can compensate for each other when something happens or in an area where we might struggle with…” Blake pulls out the small box. “You dropped this when you spilled your drink at the restaurant. I was planning to give it back to you when you got back from the restroom, but you seemed pretty upset about something and I forgot.” Blake gets down on his knees in front of Dewi, holding out the ring box. “So I guess it’s my turn to try…. Dewi Ambrosia, will you make me the happiest guy alive by becoming my husband?”

The tears are back as Dewi leans into his chest. “Of course. I wouldn’t have kept trying to ask if I didn’t want to.” After a moment, he pulls back a bit. “But that ring is yours. I bought it for you, not myself.”

“I know. Yours is sitting under the Christmas tree at home.”
