She sits in the front of my desk
In the start of my freshman high school year
I never knew if she noticed me
So I sat quietly in fear
I saw her walk in on her first day
She didn't look me in the eye
But I knew she was something special
And I had no idea why
We passed each other in the halls
Your classic high school budding romance
I wish I could just talk to her
But I didn't want to blow my chance
I was enrolled in music class
Where I always played my guitar
But one day I had an idea
The best one I'd had by far
One day in the school courtyard
When just a few students were talking
I sat waiting patiently
Until I saw her walking
She sat down by a friend at a picnic bench
I saw her stop to eat
Then when she got comfortable
I stood up on my seat
I took the guitar off my back
I took a deep breath that was long
Then her and I met eyes
And I began to sing my song
"Over every river.
Over the great blue sky
Over every crop's summer field
It could be just you and I
Everytime I look,
Into those bright blue eyes
I see something maybe you don't
Girl I ain't telling you lies
You were meant to be mine
I was meant to be yours
Since the day I saw you
I knew heaven open up the door
To give me the most beautiful girl
In the whole entire world
And ain't nothing going to take me from you
Cause your special"
The whole courtyard was silent
And she was sitting amazed
Then she got up from her table
And came over my way
I felt my heart beat faster
I don't know what to do
I had the courage and wits to stand up
But but now I had no clue
She came up close to my face
The courtyard was as quiet as could be
I blushed and began to stutter
And she simply said,
“See you tomorrow at the cafe at 3:00.”
The next day had arrived
I get all nicely dressed
My family of course teased
But I just wanted her to be impressed
I arrived at 3:00 no later
I looked for her at all the tables
Then I saw her in a yellow dress
So beautiful there are no perfect labels
We talked and laughed and shared our hobbies
We were so much in tune
She also told me, “My name’s Bobby.”
And I said my name was “Haroun.”
After the first date
There were many more
And one day on a evening picnic
And sang to her as I did before
"Over every river.
Over the great blue sky
Over every crop's summer field
It could be just you and I
Everytime I look,
Into those bright blue eyes
I see something maybe you don't
Girl I ain't telling you lies
You were meant to be mine
I was meant to be yours
Since the day I saw you
I knew heaven open up the door
To give me the most beautiful girl
In the whole entire world
And ain't nothing going to take me from you
Cause your special"
Years had went on
And then came the day
After lots of preparation
I made her my fiance
Later at the engagement party
I sang her my song again
Then later at our wedding
I sang it as a husband
But someone was invited
Who we didn't really know
Friends of friends of friends of friends
I think his name was Bo
He pulled me aside
And gave me an offer
“Play that song on the station.
and get paid for you and her.”
I waited a couple days
And then I told her about the guy
We really both felt hesitant
But she said, “I think you should give it a try.”
I met him at the station
All prepped up and ready to sing
It was on all the radios
For everyone’s listening
It started playing in the cars
Then it popped up more online
I hope that this didn't take away what was special
From this song of mine
It played in the grocery stores
It played in the mall
It played In the doctor's office
It played at halftimes in football
It played as alarms
It played as ringtones
It played in movie trailers
It played in everyone's home
When I thought I couldn't take it anymore
I was hired to sing on a stage like it was a banger
When I got to singing
My heart slowly filled with anger
I saw my lady in the concert
And when I looked her in the eye
I felt my heartbreak and two
And I took the mic and just said, “Bye”
The whole crowd stood in silence
Then there was an uproar
I just couldn't care less
If people said, “Encore!”
Bobby ran behind the curtain
And pushed between the guards
She saw me sitting down and saw me hurt’n
Sifting through some cards
“What are those?” she asked solemnly
“It's what we used to send each other.
Those days of when I sent you my song
And it wasn't just a bother.”
She bent her head down and took a breath.
“Hun, there is something you need to remember.”
“What is that?” I asked, exasperated.
“That we are together.”
I put the cards beside me
And wiped away a tear
Did it really matter
If my song was the best of the year
We both made a mistake
That was sure
We didn't care about the money
Like we thought we did before
We got up and left
And drove all the way back where we were meant to be
I pulled out my guitar
And sang to her quietly
"Over every river.
Over the great blue sky
Over every crop's summer field
It could be just you and I
Everytime I look,
Into those bright blue eyes
I see something maybe you don't
Girl I ain't telling you lies
You were meant to be mine
I was meant to be yours
Since the day I saw you
I knew heaven open up the door
To give me the most beautiful girl
In the whole entire world
And ain't nothing going to take me from you
Cause your special"
She rested her head on my shoulder
And we both knew what was truly special
It wasn't any of the money
It wasn't that at all
We both had each other
And as I caringly held my wife
Then she whispered to me
“We're what's special in our life.”

Very sweet and fits the prompt perfectly. My wife and I are high school sweethearts and we're still together 52 years now. So, this was particularly sweet for me. I just wish I could play the guitar.

Your piece resonated with me deeply. I found myself singing to my wife just like the protagonist in your story, and remarkably, I saw echoes of myself within the lyrics. The tone you employed to convey his emotions felt genuine and heartfelt, drawing me in effortlessly. I was engrossed from start to finish, unable to tear myself away. The seamless flow of your sentences kept me engaged, and although I anticipated a potentially somber ending, the twist brought a smile to my face. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed reading.
