The Unanswered Call : A Tale of Betrayal and Karma

Written in response to: "Write about someone who chooses revenge — even though forgiveness is an option."

Fiction

The phone rang with a piercing sound, breaking the silence of the late afternoon. Clara glanced at the caller ID, her heart beating as she read, "Sophie." It had been five long years since she last spoke to her sister, Sophie, who had run off with Clara's husband, leaving behind a trail of shattered dreams and broken trust.

Clara hesitated, her finger hovering over the answer button. Memories flooded her mind – the betrayal, the anguish, the sleepless nights spent wondering why her sister and husband had deceived her so cruelly. She felt healing from the hole in her life when they both walked out. But curiosity got the better of her, and she answered the call.

"Clara, please, I need your help," Sophie's voice trembled, a mix of desperation and tears. "He left me. He abandoned me with our child, and I am pregnant again. I have no one else to turn to." After five years, no one in the family heard a peep from her.

Clara felt a wave of emotion – anger, resentment, and a sense of vindication. She had rebuilt her life from the ashes, moving on from the heartbreak that Sophie and her husband had inflicted upon her. Helping Sophie, the person who had caused her so much pain, seemed absurd.

"Is this some kind of joke?" Clara replied, her voice cold and unyielding. You expect me to help you after everything you've done to me?" She took a deep breath to stop the tears from pouring down her face. She can not believe that this conservation was actually happening.

"Clara, please. I have no one else. I am scared, and I do not know what to do. I am begging you," Sophie's words were punctuated by sobs. She started to feel bad for herself, but maybe she should have done it the first time before destroying the only person who had been there for her all childhood.

Clara's mind raced. The thought of Sophie, alone and vulnerable, distilled a faint sense of pity within her. But the wounds were still too deep, the betrayal too raw. She could not offer the help her sister so desperately sought. She has a chance to keep the high ground for the sake of her child, but why should she be in one with the olive branch?

"You know what, Sophie? This is karma. You took everything from me. You ran off with my husband and left me to pick up the pieces. Now you are facing the consequences of your actions." Clara's voice was firm and devoid of sympathy. She was ready to hang up the phone but wanted to hear my sister's mystery a bit longer.

"Clara, I was wrong. I made a terrible mistake. But please, think of the child. They did not do anything wrong. They do not deserve to suffer because of my mistakes," Sophie pleaded, her voice breaking. She thought about how this niece or nephew was a stranger to her, but she expected to turn everything in her life upside down for them.

Clara closed her eyes, taking a deep breath. Her mind was a whirlwind of conflicting emotions—the desire for justice, the urge to protect herself from further pain, and the faint whisper of compassion for the innocent child caught in the crossfire. But she knew she had to be strong and spend too much time healing for them to walk back into their lives.

"You're right; the child didn't do anything wrong. But that does not change what you did. I cannot help you, Sophie. You have to figure this out on your own," Clara said, her voice resolute. She could not let her sister walk back into life like nothing had happened.

There was a long silence on the other end of the line, filled with the echoes of years of unspoken words and unresolved pain. Her life fell apart when her sister sent her a text saying that her husband was the father of her baby and they were moving away. She did not even have the guts to see it to my face.

"Clara, I understand. I am sorry for everything. I just hoped… I just hoped you could find it in your heart to forgive me," Sophie whispered, her voice barely audible. Sophie had never been this emotional in her life. She had destroyed her life and thought that a simple phone call could heal all the hurt she had caused.

Clara felt a pang of guilt, but she pushed it aside. "Goodbye, Sophie," she said, ending the call. She had to end the call because she knew the longer she was on the phone. The more likely she would wear her down, the more help them. She did not deserve it.

She stared at the phone momentarily, her mind reflecting on the conversation. Some of her wondered if she had made the right decision, but the larger part knew that she had to protect herself from further hurt. She had endured enough pain, and she deserved the peace she had fought so hard to attain.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, Clara put the phone down and walked to the window, watching the city lights flicker to life. She felt a sense of closure, a finality that brought a strange mix of relief and sorrow. She had chosen to let go of the past, to move forward without the shadow of betrayal looming over her.

Life had taught her that sometimes, the most complex decisions brought peace. As the night embraced the world, Clara found solace in the quiet strength that had carried her through the darkest times. This was proof that there is karma in the world. She believed her former husband was living a happy life with his sister.

For Clara, the unanswered call was a testament to her resilience, a reminder that she had emerged stronger from the wreckage of betrayal. And though she might never fully understand the complexities of forgiveness, she knew she had made the right choice. And that was enough.

Karma indeed. But some things are just so hard to forgive. Protecting herself was important too. Good story.
