Crossroads
Act 1
Scene 1- A dimly lit apartment in a
city. Evening.
[The stage is set with a small living room. A couch sits center stage, with a coffee table in front of it, cluttered with books and a laptop. There's a window upstage left, with heavy curtains drawn shut. To the right is a small kitchenette. A door to the bedroom is visible upstage right. The lighting is warm but subdued, casting shadows around the room. Soft music plays from a radio on a side table.]
[LAURA, a woman in her early 30s, sits on the couch, staring at the laptop screen. She wears casual clothes, her hair in a messy bun. She looks stressed, tapping her fingers on the armrest.]
[MIKE, a man in his mid-30s, enters from the bedroom, looking concerned. He wears jeans and a t-shirt, his hair slightly disheveled.]
MIKE- (gently) Laura, have you eaten anything today?
LAURA- (without looking up) Not hungry.
MIKE- (sighs, sits next to her) You need to take care of yourself. This... this isn't healthy.
LAURA- (finally looks at him) I'm fine. Just... working through some stuff.
MIKE- (leans in) Is it the job again? Or... us?
LAURA- (shakes her head) It's everything, John. Work, us, the future. I feel like I'm at a crossroads and I don't know which way to go.
MIKE- (takes her hand) Then let's figure it out together. You don't have to do this alone.
LAURA- (pulls her hand away gently) I know. But sometimes, it feels like I'm dragging you into my mess.
MIKE- (firmly) We're a team, Laura. Whatever mess you're in, we're in it together.
[Laura stands up, walking to the window. She hesitates, then pulls the curtains slightly apart, peeking outside.]
LAURA- (softly) Do you ever wonder if we made the right choices? Moving here, our jobs, everything...
MIKE- (standing, moving to her) Every day. But we can't live in what-ifs. We have to deal with what is.
LAURA- (turns to him) What if I'm not strong enough?
MIKE- (cups her face) You are. I've seen you handle so much. And when you can't, I'll be here to hold you up.
[Laura leans into him, resting her head on his shoulder. They stand like that for a moment, the tension easing slightly.]
Act 2
Scene 1- A small office. Morning.
[The stage is set with a desk cluttered with papers, a computer, and a coffee mug. There's a large window with blinds partially open, letting in the morning light. A few filing cabinets line the walls. The atmosphere is tense, the air thick with the scent of coffee and stress.]
[LAURA sits at the desk, typing furiously on the computer. Her hair is pulled back, and she wears a professional outfit. She looks determined but exhausted. Her boss, MR. OSBORNE, a man in his late 50s, stands by the desk, arms crossed, watching her.]
MR OSBORNE- (sternly) Laura, we need those reports by noon. No excuses this time.
LAURA- (without looking up) They'll be done.
MR OSBORNE- (sighs) Look, I know you're under a lot of pressure, but we can't afford any more delays.
LAURA- (pauses, looking up) I'm doing my best, Mr. Osborne.
MR. OSBORNE (softens slightly) I know you are. Just... make sure it's good enough.
[MR. OSBORNE exits, leaving LAURA alone. She leans back in her chair, closing her eyes for a moment, then resumes typing with renewed focus.]
[A colleague, STEPHANIE, a woman in her late 20s, enters carrying a stack of papers. She places them on Laura's desk.]
STEPHANIE- (cheerfully) Hey, how's it going?
LAURA- (smiles weakly) Just another day in paradise.
STEPHANIE-(sits on the edge of the desk) You need a break. Let's grab lunch later.
LAURA- (hesitates) I can't. Too much to do.
STEPHANIE-(concerned) Laura, you're burning out. You need to take care of yourself.
LAURA- (nods) I know. Just... not today.
STEPHANIE- (squeezes her shoulder) Alright. But don't push yourself too hard. We need you here.
[Stephanie exits, leaving LAURA alone again. She stares at the screen, her resolve wavering, then continues working.]
Act 3
Scene 1: A quiet park. Late
Afternoon
[The stage is set with a few benches and a large tree upstage. The lighting is soft, with the sun setting, casting a golden hue. Birds chirp in the background, creating a peaceful ambiance.]
[LAURA sits on a bench, looking contemplative. She's wearing casual clothes, looking more relaxed than before. MIKE enters, carrying a picnic basket. He spots her and smiles, walking over.]
MIKE- (sitting next to her) Thought you could use a change of scenery.
LAURA- (smiles) You always know what I need.
MIKE- (opens the basket) I brought your favorites. Figured we could have a little picnic.
LAURA- (leans in, looking at the contents) You spoil me.
MIKE- (laughs) Only because you deserve it.
[They start unpacking the basket, setting out food on the bench between them.]
MIKE- (after a pause) How was work?
LAURA- (sighs) Stressful. But... I managed.
MIKE- (nods) That's all we can do sometimes. Just manage.
LAURA- (looks at him) Do you ever feel like... we're just going through the motions?
MIKE- (thinks for a moment) Sometimes. But then I remember why we're doing this. For us, for our future.
LAURA- (smiles) You always know what to say.
MIKE- (takes her hand) Because I know you. And I believe in us.
[They eat in comfortable silence, the tension from earlier scenes replaced with a sense of calm and togetherness.]
Scene 2- The same apartment as
Act 1. Evening.
[The lighting is warmer, more inviting. The clutter is slightly more organized. LAURA and MIKE sit on the couch, close together, looking at a photo album.]
LAURA- (pointing to a photo) Remember this? Our first apartment.
MIKE- (laughs) How could I forget? The leaky roof, the noisy neighbors...
LAURA- (laughs) We made it work, though.
MIKE- (nods) Just like we'll make this work. Whatever comes our way.
LAURA- (leans into him) I'm glad I have you.
MIKE- (kisses her forehead) Always.
[They continue looking through the album, reminiscing and laughing, the sense of hope and love palpable.]
[The lights fade out, leaving the stage in darkness, but with a lingering feeling of optimism and resilience.]
Curtain.
