Romance

Eons ago when the cosmos had just come to be there were just two beings. The first one is a giant being named Solaro; he has yellow skin that glows and bright white eyes that will blind you if you look at them too long. He gives off a warmth that can break through any chill and he wraps his arms around our world to keep us warm. The second one is a slightly smaller being named Celestia, she is almost as dark as the night itself but her white eyes help lead lost travelers home. She is not as warm and inviting as Solaro which is why it is strange to think that she caught his eye one day, Solaro was relaxing and observing their home when he spotted her off in the distance.

She was moving her arms this way and that as small little objects flew past her and it took a second for Solaro to realize that she was moving little pieces of rock out of her way. The closer he got the more it looked like she was dancing while she was doing so and before too long Solaro found himself enamored by her. “Who are you?” Celestia asked when she realized that she had someone watching her slightly disturbed by the intrusion. Even her wispy voice sounded perfect to Solaro and he could not help but to smile at her before he realized that she had asked him a question.

“Oh! I am so sorry. My name is Solaro and I saw you from off in the distance. I was only moving closer to see what you were doing since all I could see was you waving your arms around and you moved so elegantly.” he admitted his louder voice causing her to flinch for a second.

“Well thank you. I got hit by one of these things a while ago and I’ve been practicing how to move them out of my way.” Celestia said as she caught one and held it up to him. Solaro gently took it from her and held it up to examine it before he went to push it away frowning when the rock seemed to wobble instead of shoot off in a straight line. Celestia covered her mouth as she gave a small laugh “If you want. I can show you how to do it. It would be interesting to see how you move.” she said while taking his hands. Over the next several centuries the two of them practiced moving the rocks away from themselves and sometimes they would even play a game where they would push the rock at each other until one of them either missed it and it floated away or one of them had to dodge it. Solaro already knew that he longed to be with Celestia and after five centuries, he asked her to be his forever.

Celestia did not know what the feeling was that came over her but she happily agreed and the two of them would go on to have many children. Celestia gave birth to millions of babies, all but one of them had yellow skin and bright white eyes like their father while one took on an appearance closer to their mother. This child had blue skin with green spots on it and it did not give off a glow or warmth and had to stay close to Solaro at all times to keep warm they would name this one Terra. As Terra grew, she would start to sprout various things that we know as trees and plants. At first Solaro and Celestia were worried because no one else had this happening but when they saw that she was just as happy and healthy as always as long as she stayed near her father they came to realize that it was not something to fear.

Eventually, other things would appear, animals such as fish, birds, reptiles, and mammals including us humans. Solaro and Celestia would be overjoyed and see all of us as their grandchildren; they would always stand side by side and watch us as we went about our day. Then they realized that something was wrong, where ever Celestia was no plants would grow and the side that Solaro would watch would be full of life but some of the beings on that side looked to be extremely miserable. “My skin feels cold right here where Mother stands but my skin burns right where Father stands.” Terra told them.

“There has to be something that we can do.” Celestia said as she stared at the barren land that had once had beautiful vibrant life on it. Solaro looked at her, saw the heartbreak on her face, and did his best to come up with a solution.

“I know that it would pain you my love but maybe it is best if we back off a little bit. Us being so close is doing more harm than it is good. Look at all of the little ones, that man right there stands in your shade but for a moment to get some relief from my heat, and right there the grass has begun to turn brown.” he said a look of sadness came across Celestia’s face.

“I know that you’re right but if Terra moves too far away she becomes cold. Without you, every living thing on her surface will freeze.” Celestia said.

“I have a suggestion Mother.” one of their other children chimed in and everyone turned to face them. “Terra can let Father know when he has far enough away to not warm her too much.” they suggested. Solaro and Celestia looked at each other surprised that one of their children possibly fixed the problem before they had but they turned to Terra.

“Do you want to give that a try?” Celestia asked and Terra nodded her head yes. Slowly Solaro moved away from Terra his heart hurting at having to be away from his child.

“Father move forward just a bit.” Terra called out and he stopped before moving forward once again. “Right there is the perfect distance. I feel warm but it is not to the point where the little creatures on my surface are not comfortable. It seems like they are happier.” Terra said with a smile.

“There is one problem.” another one of the children chimed in.

“What is it?” Terra asked now concerned.

“The side that father is not facing is dark and the humans on that side are working on something. They seemed confused as to where he has gone.” the sibling shouted. Solaro walked around the other way to look and did indeed see several little humans looking up at the sky with a look of confusion on their faces until they spotted him.

“What do we do now? I cannot get any closer or else I could scorch the land again but I cannot be two places at once. How will the humans see to get inside of their homes?” he asked.

“Look at Mother! Her skin has taken on a glow just like yours father!” a third child cried out and Solaro looked up to see that Celestia was now indeed glowing just like him.

“My love have you always done that?” he asked confused.

“I do not know. I never noticed before. However, the humans on my side are yawning and heading inside. They are using the light that is coming from me to be able to see to get inside of their homes.” Celestia said as she watched the humans put their tools away and slowly head inside. “That solves one problem but we cannot possibly stand like this forever.” she said with a laugh. She saw the look Solaro was giving her and knew that he had come up with an idea.

“Let us try and see if us slowly moving around Terra does anything.” he said and the two of them slowly started to walk around Terra making sure to not move too close or too far from her. After walking around her a few times, as they did so they came to realize that it seemed to cause all of the creatures’ confusion. The ones that preferred to be in the shade of Celestia would wake up and stretch only to become confused when they would find themselves in the warmth and light of Solaro a moment later. “I think that we should give a bit more distance. The little ones on the surface do not seem to know if they should wake up or go to bed.” he called out and Celestia nodded her head. After they had walked around Terra, a few more times they found a distance that did not bother the living creatures on the surface.

“I think that we have figured it out.” Celestia said with a smile as she looked down at the humans who were once again heading inside their home and the little animals that woke up and stretched as she slowly passed by. She looked up only for her smile to drop when she saw how far away from Solaro she was.

“This is for the best my love.” he told her with a sad smile himself. Her heart ached but she knew that to move closer to Solaro would hurt the little lives on the surface that they loved. She wiped her tears away and continued to walk around Terra smiling down at the creatures that wandered the surface to let them know that she held no ill will towards them. However, it is impossible to expect an all-knowing immortal being to be able to see their love from a distance and not want to touch them so every few years Solaro and Celestia meet up once again to embrace each other before they continue the cycle.

“Is that what they are doing right now mommy?” the little boy asked his mother as he watched the darkness slowly approach them as Celestia moved into position. He was still afraid of the dark and the fact that it seemed to be getting dark while the sun was still out had frightened him.

“Yes, it is. Celestia is just walking over to Solaro so that she can feel the warmth of his embrace. This is the first time I have seen it though but I heard that other areas have seen it and your grandparents witnessed it when they were much younger.” the woman said as she wrapped her arms around her child. The two of them watched as the darkness slowly engulfed them, she had already warned him about not looking at the two embracing having heard of people going blind when they did so. Instead, her son walked off to join his father as they walked around and did their best to calm down the animals who had started to panic due to the day suddenly turning to night.

Lovely. A long distance romance, where the lovers meet once every blue moon.

Thank you. Like I said in the other comment I was inspired by Greek/Roman mythology without the betrayal. Everything done in the story is out of love.

This is brilliant and beautiful! I love it! This reminds me of the mythopoetic and magical reality genres. The concept and fresh, lovely imagery takes us on a journey through a romance of the sun and moon. Wonderful. A very special story.

Thank you. I did my best to pull from Greek/Roman mythology since that's what popped in my head when trying to think of how to explain the stars and our planet (the fact that I had just started playing Hercules for my daughter and the muses were singing helped too). And then I thought about how would I explain why the moon stops in front of the sun to my daughter and since she loves to run up and give people hugs I put that as the reasoning for the eclipse in the end.
