When Winnie walked home, she noticed a gleam hidden by some leaves. Winnie picked up a slightly dirty everyday ring. Gazing at it, she wondered, "Should I try it on? No, wait till I get home." "Home!" she called to her Mum, ironing at the kitchen table, ironing is easier that way.

" Snacks and drinks in the fridge. Good day?"

"Only ordinary," Winnie replied, taking her cake for afternoon tea.

"Yum, thanks, Mum." Her Mum was on her phone, chatting to her friend, while still ironing. She did not even answer. By four o'clock, Winnie was staring at her ring.

"So, now I've got a ring," she muttered, as she slid the lovely jewel on the third finger of her right hand, It fitted perfectly. The ring gleamed and bedroom door closed. An amazing glow and summery perfume of roses filled her room. Magical sparkles were flying.

"This is magic!" she whispered, "I wish I had a friend to share this." Her room was transformed, she giggled at the delightful light display.

Flash! With a soft thud, something strange appeared. A damp nose nudged her hand. Winnie blinked and rubbed her eyes. She looked again. At her side was the most adorable pastel rainbow unicorn, with gossamer wings, neatly folded at its sides. On its forehead, there grew a golden horn, already sparkling. In its mouth, it held a little stick, which the unicorn dropped.

"Go on, pick up your magic wand," the unicorn told her.

"Who are you?" Winnie was stunned.

" I am Unique, your friend." The unicorn replied, tenderly kissing her hands with its soft muscle. Winnie hesitated, then waved her wand. Nothing happened. It was disappointing.

"What's the use of this?" she asked.

"The magic wand can grant you wishes. But be careful what you wish for, nothing too greedy, like diamond necklaces. It is really to help you in the battles ahead." Winnie did not believe that!

"What battles? Who for?"

"I bring you good magic, the wand is transforming you into Winnie, witch of the week."

Winnie was unsure what she believed.

"So, can I be smarter at school, slim and sporty?"

"Yes," said Unique the Unicorn, "these requests make you stronger for the battle against Evillia and her team of evil, little witches,"

"Who? Unique told her a tale.

"Listen to me. Magic rings and wands appear in the world of humans, when you are needed to defeat great danger. The head witch is Evillia, these witches are all tiny and bad. They are disguised as rocks. They are all ugly, they have greasy, stringy hair and they roam around on terrible broomsticks."

"Yuk! They sound disgusting. What do they want here?"

"It is a special suburb. These witches are cruel, and nasty. They're going to try and get rid of all the kids. They're armed."

"What does she want to destroy kids for?"

"You represent the future. The witches can strike any time. Be prepared!"

"What do I have to do?" Winnie asked, bewildered.

"They're not here yet, so chill. I give advice on homework, being clever."

Giggling, Winnie opened her homework, not really believing yet.

"Let's make you Number One!" the Unicorn said. Homework was finished in record time! Next morning, Unique the spangled Unicorn awoke her, smiling.

"How did you sleep, best friend?" Unique asked her.

"Great!" she replied, "Can I ask you some questions?"

"Go right ahead." Unique responded.

"Is this imaginary? Can Mum see you too? Are you coming to school with me? Can anyone see you? Why did I get chosen for the ring and the wand?"

"Wow, lots of questions! But good questions. Adults mostly can't see me. No one can see me unless I want them to."

Winnie lay back on her pillows, unsure.

"You are going to be an undercover witch, for now."

Unique blessed her morning, as Winnie kissed his head, touching its miraculous golden horn. Tingles.

Unique said softly, "Smile at everyone you talk to today, so they'll smile at you. Practise on your Mum."

"Okay."

Mum did not notice the mysterious ring on her hand, let alone the Unicorn. "My best friend's been right so far," Winnie thought, walking home at the end of that day.

Her homework was 100%! Winnie had completed her classroom tasks, and received a 'Student of the Week,' certificate. No one could believe it.

"So that was my best day at school ever, "she whispered, "thank you, my best friend."

Then, Super Saturday! Winnie awoke nestled under a silver castle.

"So," Unique asked, 'what do you usually do on Saturdays?"

"Mum and I have shopping Saturday. "

"Bring your wand with you all the time now, there's black magic in the air. On guard!"

Mum and Winnie drove to the supermarket. There was a crowd standing at the front sliding doors of the shop, trolleys ready. Nearby, little rocks appeared to have hag-like spotty faces. Adults looked extremely cross, saying, "Why is the supermarket closed? It's supposed to open at 7am! Where's all the checkout chicks?"

"We're right here, we can't open the sliding doors!"

The store manager sounded annoyed, so did the adults.

"We can't buy any food for our kids!! Open up!" One parent yelled, "This is useless!"

"Don't talk to me like that. I cannot open these doors, get off my back!! You families will have to go hungry. Any better ideas, hot shot!"

"HA! HA! HA! How do you like that? Starve kids, starve!!!" Winnie looked at the rocks. "Yuk," she breathed.

"We've frozen the sliding doors forever! These guns freeze things. You're next, kids, if you haven't starved to death. No kids, no future!"

"HA! HA! HA!"

Winnie whispered, "Where are you now, Unique?" she whispered, frightened," how are we going to buy this week's shopping? We've run out of toilet paper too!"

The rocks began to arise in the morning sky.

"First you kids, then the world!" Evillia shrieked in her raspy loud voice. Winnie was terrified. Small black broomsticks, with cruel little witches began flying in circles.

"Super Saturday!" Winnie felt sarcastic, "Now what do I do?"

"Getting hungry, you cute little kids?? HA! HA! HA!"

"Calling Unique, calling Unique. Please send some good magic here, right away. Please!"

Unique the Unicorn appeared. Could Winnie really turn into a winning witch?

"Polish your magic ring, and ask for a good idea. This is one battle ahead."

Winnie had a brainwave!'

"I know what to do, if the wand works"

"What are you going to do?" Unique asked.

"I shall use the magic wand to clone you. I can make a hundred Unicorns."

"But..." the Unicorn paused,

"Bui what?" she asked Unique.

"I won't be Unique the Unicorn any more"

"Is it that important?" she said.

"No, it's more important to beat Evillia."

"Okay, here's hoping!" Winnie waved her magic wand three times.

Flash!! Sparks!! Diamonds appeared like stars in the sky above the supermarket. The adults could not see them. There stood a hundred clones of Unique the Unicorn. Evillia yelled rudely from above.

"What good's that going to do!"

Winnie called back to Evillia.

"Give up your evil plan! I am sending in my Unicorns!"

"You won't beat me!" Evillia shrieked, "In your dreams!"

One hundred Unique Unicorns flew upwards on their silky, gossamer wings, circling the coven of ugly hags.

Then began the legendary battle of Super Saturday at the supermarket! The Unicorns floated silently in formation, until close to the witches. Unique headed for Evillia first. Led by Unique, they touched each horrible dirty hag with their tingling golden horns. Success ! The witches were furious. Evillia was first to go. Her black, straggly broomstick shrivelled up into nothing, then she tumbled from the sky.

Thump! The witches all landed, immediately transformed into rocks. The Unicorns kept floating. Magic was in the air!

"Hi fives!" She and Unique kissed and tingled. Winnie was voted as winning witch of the week. Good won!
