Fiction Horror

This story contains themes or mentions of physical violence, gore, or abuse.

I breathed in the ghost riddled air as we entered the midnight lit school

I was here to prove I wasn’t a coward

I wasn’t! Wasn’t a coward, just…careful.

Yet here we were, on a dare, on a wim, thinking we’d see something on this halloween night

My stomach turned as Clarise pulled me forward

“We must see what resides inside.” She spoke her voice low with excitement

“ I doubt the coward would enter 3 feet let alone find anything mysterious.”

The words of Darim echoed through my head

Of course he wasn’t here sneaking out of bed into unknown ground

He was asleep in bed, not making a sound

Conveniently sickened, the day before

How strange

I doubt he would even remember what we did tonight tomorrow

I watched in pure terror as the gate yawned open

Welcoming four new victims into its grave

Liam went in fearless

John followed careless

Clarrise then went breathless

Then I went in powerless to stop anyone

Surely we were all going to die tonight

I jumped as the doors squeaked closed, but the others hadn’t heard

Or just didn’t care

I wanted to turn and run

Run home to my bed

Run home to my house

Run to anywhere but here

But I stood my ground and followed quietly

The abandoned school was silent not even a mouse was heard

Breeze flowed freely through  the open windows and floorboards creaked creepily as we walked

I jumped at every sound, cowering behind the somehow unfazed Clarrise

“Let's split up to cover more ground.” She suggested

I tried to decline, but with a blink everyone sprinted off in different directions

North, South, East, and South east

Of course the South east corridor

The one that had spider webs covering the floors

They gave me the scariest one

Maybe they wanted to test me, see if I was the coward Darim stated me to be

Well I wasn’t going to give up just yet

I carefully snuck down the hall

I did my best to be quiet, I just knew…someone was watching

I slowly turned each corner, glancing back every 5 seconds

It seemed I had been walking forever when I saw a shadow

Immediately I jumped, my heart pounded wildly, and my legs shook

Then my breathing slowed to a slow sigh and my heart beat calmly

It was my shadow crawling up the floorboards as I walked

I thought nothing of it as I walked

How stupid was I not to see the endlarged figure walking three steps behind me

How stupid I was not to notice the way my shadow grew almost swallowing me whole

How stupid I was not to notice the coarse breathing into my ears

Then there was  a crack and a sound and a scream and cold hands wrapped around my neck

The crack was the floor falling and sound was something pouncing at me and the scream was from me as I plummeted downwards into the dark

I hit the ground with responding force shattering my bones

Yet I felt no pain

The grip around my neck had tightened and as I rolled onto the ground I felt a weight topple onto me

I couldn’t see anything in the dark

I could feel the air in my lungs escaping me as the figure squeezed their hands around my neck

“Help” was what I wanted to say, but I couldn’t

The world was black and blue now and I snuck into darkness

I knew someone was going to die today

Who knew it was going to be me

I faintly heard someone talking though it was hardly a whisper

I felt my hand twitch and tremble on the ground

I opened my eyes and rested them on Clarrise’s worried face

“Are you okay! We all heard a scream and booked it over here as fast as we could!”

“I’m fine” Is what I would’ve said if I could speak

Instead my voice came out as a high pitched squeak, one that wasn’t from me

“Just…fine” The voice said

I felt myself stand, turn around in a circle then smile

Yet this wasn’t me doing this, but I was

I tried lifting my hand

It only trembled at my side, my body wasn’t under my control anymore

It started to walk with a mind of its own down the hall

Clarrise and Liam followed after, but one was missing John

My runaway body turned the corner and almost tripped over a arm

Slowly it looked down at a decapitated John

His head was a few feet away, eyes glazed with terror, mouth opened wide

Blood splattered the floorboards and huge claw marks were buried in his chest

Something had ripped out his heart leaving a hole

Clarrise screamed and rushed to his side, Liam hurried after her

Together they grieved over John’s body as I looked down at them all

I felt myself smile

Why did I smile over this disgusting site

I never liked him anyway, my runaway thoughts, thought wickedly

There was a thump at a door

My runaway head turned to look at it

It squealed opened and my legs moved towards it

The others cowered behind me as we entered the courtyard

It was like watching through a mirror as we walked to a tree

My body stumbled forward and looked at it

A smile creeped across my face again

It didn’t feel like mine

Then my body threw my arms at the tree, grasping the branches

My runaway leg pushed upwards pushing me up the tree

I tried to move again, reaching my hands towards Clarrise

It worked

I helped her up as Liam stood flabbergasted

I tried to move again to help him, but my body was again not mine

He looked up expectantly, but no matter how much I tried my body was not mine to control

Then a howl was heard and we all looked up

I felt another wicked smile reach across my face

Cheek to cheek

Wide with laughter

It was unnatural, terrifying, cruel

A beast jumped down from the roof and ran towards us

Liam yelped and tried to push himself up the tree

But my out of control legs pushed him down again

Clarrise didn’t move

Frozen with horror

The beast, on two legs, with a furry body, and long claws pounced on Liam

It ripped him apart

Blood and intestines stained the ground and tree trunk

Liam screamed with fear and pain and the beast ripped at him and bit off every limb that tried to stop it

Then it lunged for his faced and clawed at it

Eating at his brain

He screamed and screamed and screamed as me and Clarrise watched like it was a movie

The werewolf ate at his corpse

His screams gone his face twisted in fear and anger as the wolf devoured him whole

Then as if finished with a meal the wolf flung his remains high until it was speared on a high branch

Blood dripped onto Me and Clarrise

This was a cruel fate even for him

The wolf then turned and jumped onto the roof disappearing into the dark

Then my runaway body climbed down and helped Clarrise

We both stood at where Liam had died

Looking at the blood stained stone

We then entered back into the building

Clarrise turned to me eyes as cold as steel

“We speak of this to no one”

I let out a wicked smile mouth full of new teeth

“You're right,” The high pitched voice said, “I won’t.”

This was not me anymore, I realized

For I was already dead I looked down finally in control and saw my ghostly pale body

I peered down into the hole and saw where I had died

I was dead before I had even taken a step into the rotted floorboards

Dead before I had even hit the ground in that basement

Dead before the figure choked me to death and possessed my body

Dead before I even managed to prove myself as brave

With that Clarrise was gone, the fake me at her side

I watched my body walk away, leaving me behind

I swear I even saw it wave and smile wickedly at me

I felt myself fading as my friend disappeared with the fake

I knew we were all going to die today

It was only a matter of time before Clarrise was dead too

And we all would be trapped here

In this abandoned school

As the monster in my runaway body

Destroyed the world…
