The kitchen was a whirlwind of activity, but now, as the last plates were scrubbed clean and the aroma of tonight's specials slowly dissipated, tranquility began to settle in. The staff, weary but satisfied, congregated near the exit, awaiting the final words from their leader.

Chef Elena stood at the heart of the kitchen, her pristine white coat marked with the remnants of a hard night's work. Her eyes, tired but twinkling with pride, scanned the room, taking in the faces of her team.

"Everyone, gather around!" she called out, her voice carrying the authority and warmth that endeared her to them.

As they formed a loose semi-circle, she took a deep breath, savoring the moment.

"I want to thank you all for an incredible night," she began, her voice strong and sincere.

"The dishes were flawless, the service impeccable, and the teamwork—well, you all made me proud. It's nights like these that remind me why I love this job so much."

A murmur of appreciation rippled through the group, smiles spreading across tired faces. Some clapped, others patted each other on the back, and a few exchanged knowing glances, relishing the shared sense of accomplishment.

"Now, go home, get some rest," Elena continued, her tone easing into a lighter note. "You've all earned it. We'll do it all again tomorrow."

The staff began to disperse, laughter and chatter filling the air as they headed for the door. Elena watched them go, her heart swelling with gratitude. She turned back to the counters, ready to tidy up the last bits of the evening, when she noticed someone lingering behind.

It was Maria, one of the sous chefs. She stood nervously, hands clasped in front of her, eyes downcast.

"Maria, is everything alright?" Elena asked, her brow furrowing in concern as she approached.

Maria looked up, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. "Chef, I—I need to talk to you," she stammered, her voice barely above a whisper.

"Of course, Maria. What's on your mind?"

Maria took a deep breath, trembling somewhat, "I..I wanted to say how grateful I am for you that you're catering for me and Paul's wedding."

Elena cleared her throat as she opened her own recipe book, "All in the past, Paul wanted to be with you more. I'm happy for you both."

Maria smiled, "I never meant to hurt you.." turning to the door she glanced at the recipe book smiling, "Is my cake's recipe in there?"

"Oh yes, your receipe is in here!" Elena picked up her pen without making eye contact with Maria, "Now, go. Enjoy the rest of your evening or what's left of it."

Elena poured a glass of wine, took a swig before opening up her recipe book. In there a photograph of herself and Paul.

The first photograph she saw was of Paul, his smile wide and eyes sparkling with joy. They were at the beach, the sun setting behind them, casting a warm glow on their entwined figures. She could almost hear his laughter, feel the warmth of his touch. They had spent that day lost in each other, oblivious to the world around them.

She remembered how he had whispered sweet promises in her ear, his voice a soothing balm to her soul. Those memories, once a source of comfort, now felt like a cruel joke.As she turned the pages, each photograph seemed to mock her. The picnic in the park, the spontaneous road trip, the mornings spent wrapped in each other's arms. Every image was a reminder of the love she had once believed in, a love that had turned to ashes in her hands.

Her gaze shifted to the next page, and her heart clenched. There was a photograph of Maria, a supposed friend who had been a constant presence in their lives. Elena's mind was dragged back to that fateful day, the day everything shattered. She had walked into their favorite café, a place filled with memories of laughter and shared secrets, only to find Paul and Maria in a corner, their heads close together, their hands entwined.

The world had seemed to tilt on its axis as she watched Maria lean in and kiss Paul, a kiss filled with a passion that had been reserved for her. The shock had been a knife to her heart, quickly replaced by a seething rage. She had confronted them, her voice shaking with the force of her betrayal. Paul had tried to explain, his words hollow and meaningless. The trust was gone, replaced by a void that threatened to consume her.

Elena slammed the album shut, her hands shaking violently. The memories of the good times were now twisted, corrupted by the betrayal that had poisoned her soul. She hurled the album across the room, watching it hit the wall and fall to the floor with a dull thud. It lay there, a relic of a past that refused to let her go as she began writing in her recipe book.

Ingredients:

1 unsuspecting friend

2 cups of trust

1 sharp knife

A pinch of deceit

1 bottle of poison (preferably tasteless)1 locked room

2 tablespoons of patience

A dash of premeditation

Preparation Time:

2 weeks of meticulous planning

Cooking Time:

30 minutes of execution

Instructions:

Marinate the Trust:

Begin by ensuring your friend is completely unsuspecting. Shower them with kindness, build their trust, and make them believe in your unwavering friendship. This step is crucial for the dish to turn out perfectly.

Prepare the Setting:

Choose a secluded location, preferably a locked room where interruptions are unlikely. Clean and prepare this space thoroughly, ensuring all necessary tools are within easy reach.

Sharpen the Knife:

Take your sharp knife and ensure it is in pristine condition. A dull knife will only complicate the process. This step is akin to sharpening your culinary skills before making a gourmet meal.

Mix in Deceit:

Sprinkle a pinch of deceit into your interactions. This will add the necessary flavor to your plan, ensuring your friend remains clueless about your true intentions.

Add Patience:

Carefully measure out 2 tablespoons of patience. This dish requires precise timing and a calm demeanor. Rushing will only lead to mistakes, so take your time and let the anticipation build.

Incorporate the Poison:

When the moment is right, subtly introduce the tasteless poison into your friend’s drink or food. Stir well, ensuring it is evenly distributed. This step requires a steady hand and a cold heart.

Execute the Plan:

Once all ingredients are in place, lock the room and proceed with the final step. Use the sharp knife to ensure no loose ends remain. This is the moment where all your preparation comes to fruition.

Clean Up:

After the dish is complete, meticulously clean the area. Dispose of any evidence, ensuring nothing traces back to you. This step is akin to washing up after a meal, leaving no trace of your culinary adventure.

Serving Suggestion:

Serve cold. This dish is best enjoyed with a side of alibi and a garnish of fake remorse.

Hi Kate, hope you're well. Thank you so much for your lovely comment. It was a fun prompt and as a huge Hitchcock fan, I wanted to try a little Alfred-esque story. Thank you and have a wonderful day.
