Science Fiction

The abyss had a way of looking at me that made me feel safe. It was quiet, peaceful. Quite lovely to be frank. The immense blanket of darkness that surrounds me has comforted me as long as I can recall. From time to time there would be music, murmurs that travelled from far away to be translated into unrecognizable syllables. Sometimes the darkness would bring me friends, some would stay and some would go. A few times us gaseous clouds dissolved into one another and created a new being. I let myself indulge in relaxation as I melt into the universe's mold of me.

OUCH!

A sharp pain attacked me. I looked around, more black velvet greeted me. Is the fabric of darkness finally fed up with me? Is it time to forfeit all the comfort I've bathed in? Maybe I never showed enough appreciation. Oh blanket of darkness, I hereby declare my love-

YEEOOOW! I let out a blood curdling shriek. Every fiber of my being felt hot like I had panoplies of miniscule meteoroids attempting to break free. To break me. I'm not gonna let that happen. The gases inside me were having a civil war. One gas does not accept that they should be sharing the same space as the other. What meaningless banter, why can't you just be grateful for the space you have and carry on? I would love to not care but they are the make up of my consciousness. Something needs to be done, and fast.

I reached inside of me and started boiling. Why am I having to deal with this? I want my chill existence back, NOW!

Boom. I felt myself cool down as I sent vibrations hurling in all directions. I became warm again but the burning sensation disappeared. Wow, yelling into the abyss was liberating, I'll make a point to do it every now and then. Although the forever sea of darkness is comforting, there are times I feel as if I were being swallowed up by it. I extended my flames into the abyss yearning to feel its touch.

What is that? I looked around to realize the abyss was still my beloved comforter, but so were these rocks drifting around me. I could see them bobbing around me. My light reflecting their rough surface. I start pulling them towards me to get a better view.

Plop. It fell into my flaming stomach and melted, A serge of flames bubbled up and flared larger than any of my other flames.

A deep vibrating scream slapped me before I had shovelled the next scoop into me. The feeling almost muted by the time it reached my side of the black blanket but I could make out what they said. It wasn't long until another was sent back to me. Years upon years of listening to the universes music I was accustomed to the general meaning behind them. This one's tone clearly indicated they had a bone to pick. I was menacingly spat at with their words:

"Is there someone out there?"

I mocked their vivacious tone at waves, too quiet for them to hear.

Is there someone out there? I'm the stupid voice that is not capable of saying a simple 'hello'

Silence.

"Ah, there's another sound this time a bit louder. Listen I can't really see you but I'd love to talk"

It paused as if waiting for an answer, too bad it's never going to come. I continued shoveling rocks into my fire.

"I discovered something pretty neat, there was an abnormally large asteroid circling around me not too long ago"

This consciousness is gonna be a hard one to get rid of.

"I haven't been around for too long, so when I first noticed it I freaked out and pushed it away from me. I thought that was going to be the end of it"

What a weakling, I thought grabbing another group of asteroids and hurled them towards myself.

"But it kept circling me and eventually turned all blue, me being the curious mind I am, started testing different asteroids at different distances around me"

Wow does this thing have anything better to do?

"I discovered they turn super red when you keep them close to you and turn green in the middle"

This is getting boring but I kind of want to see these coloured rocks he's talking about. I pulled a few asteroids towards me, stopping them before they were too close. All of them were abnormally shaped but none of them were abnormally large. I started spinning them so they would mash together and create a larger rock.

Aren't I impressive, it's spinning around me!

"Have around 5 rocks floating around me I might make more..."

Who does this being think they are? It's all about quality over quantity. I looked at my little friend rotating around me, I brought them closer then pushed them away from me. This way they experienced both warmth and the lack thereof.

Ha, this planet it way better than all of your caged temperature planets.

After I made 10 planets. I was finally contente, this calls for a break!

Alas, I stretched my light and elluminate the newly made worlds around me.

The first planet I made was developing what I called anti-fire it was the opposite of hot and always came into existence after I moved the planet towards me after it had been frozen. I decided to put it aside while I made the other planets. Low and behold, they were prospering when I checked on them. A couple of planets ended up spinning the way wanted them to most of them spinned nearly parallel to my eye level and I could not stand it. I engineered another planet to potentially harbor life although it ended up crashing with my first planet and orbiting around it. My punishment for not being a good creator I guess.

Circulate around another large body of mass see if I care! I said through tears in my core.

I turned my attention elsewhere. My flames licked the edges of the abyss. I miss the old days when I wasn't this hot and flamey. There was a stain, as I gazed into the abyss I found a lighthouse amongst the velvet curtains.

What is this stain doing here?

"Impressive? You're not like anything I've encountered before. So it's safe to say that you being the only thing to respond to me, means you are the worst and best existence in my life time"

Thanks I know I make awesome planets… You're pretty cool after all, maybe we could be friends.

A long silence dragged on afterwards, but I took care of my planets nonetheless. One even started growing life!

Interrupted by the other being reaction to seeing me for the first time.

"Hi there! You must be the one I was talking to, aren't you a bright one, I quite like your constant glow. Mine is extremely strong, I'm unable to have life on my planet and make friends. All my planets turn brown after a little while."

I don't think this friend thing is going to work.

After a while my planets developed larger organisms some of which were starting how to communicate. Between long pauses the other being and I would make conversation. I bet him that I would make life on one of my planets intelligent as I am. Then we started creating stories to amuse ourselves. Whales and beings making a huge kerfuffle, or the one where a child ended up marrying his mother because of some "predetermined future".

It was fun but I never thought to call the other being something other than "being". So today I assigned them a name.

"I'm going to call you S.T.A.R., short for a Stinking Terrible, Amalgamation of Rakefire, more fun to say. You should call me something too"

I sent out the message and I waited for the response while I sent whale noises to my planets. Whales were the few animals that responded to my vibrations within the orbits. They had some of the most beautiful songs as well. It was enjoyable chattering on to something that immediately responds to you. By surprise, one day I came into contact with a "human" on the planet. That was the day the whales all went silent. This human finally gained enough intelligence to interact with me. He pondered "What's the meaning of life?"

"You were made to win a competition, my child"

"I am here to give a premonition? I am your child!"

What no- The frequency of our link is off but I will share my knowledge with this child.

"Tell me what is your name?"

"I am…" Huh, thats a good question maybe if I look at it at another angle I will make some sense of it "Je suis…"

Blank. Who am I?

"Je sui… Jeez us" "I will spread your name throughout this world Jeezus"

Lost in the realm of my new found thoughts I ignored the creatures for a while and even the S.T.A.R. stopped talking to me, or maybe it didn't I wasn't paying attention.

"I- who am I…?" I finally managed to murmur.

In response to the comment I made before the weakened breath of the S.T.A.R. said to me:

"Stinking, Terrible, Amalgamation of Rakefire, or S.T.A.R., I like it"

"I know who you are, but what in the universe am I?"

"I'll call you P.I.G., Pothole In the Gravel. That's what I call this black stuff"

A P.I.G. huh, the short but curt sound of the word had a nice ring to it.

"I think this is it for me P.I.G., I enjoyed the time spent talking to you even though there was a bit of a delay" I felt all of S.T.A.R.'s emotions spill out toward me.The folds of darkness surrounded me once again, enveloping me. It was as if my whole being melted out of existence.

Finally some peace and quiet. I guess I will forever be a P.I.G. in a blanket.
