Beep Beep Beep. Jack's alarm to wake up for school went off. He turned it off and got out of bed. He quickly took a shower and got dressed. He quickly looked in a mirror and brushed his sandy brown hair into shape. He went downstairs and got an apple and his backpack and headed to the bus stop.
“Hey, Jack,” said Olivia, who was one of his classmates. She lived pretty close to him and they took the same bus to school. Her black hair looked like it had been straightened because her hair was usually curly and her dark brown skin complexion was very different compared to Jack's golden bronze skin tone.
“Wassup,” he said.
“Are you going to the school dance tonight?” asked Olivia. He just shrugged and munched on his apple. They just stood there in awkward silence waiting for the bus to come. Jack’s friend named Sam was crossing the street to get to the bus stop. Sam and Jack had been friends since as long as they can remember.
“Hey, man what up” said Sam. They bumped fists. The bus pulled up and they got on. They went and sat down in the back of the bus.
“Are you going to ask anybody to the dance?” asked Sam.
“I don’t know” answered Jack, ”I might ask Olivia.”
“I didn’t know you liked her” said Sam
“Well, it's just I think she likes me,” said Jack, “but I'm not totally sure.” The bus finally got to the school. Jack and Sam split up and went to their classes. Jack's first class was with Olivia. He was thinking about her the whole class and was daydreaming about her. He went to math and then lunch next.
He went and got his lunch and sat down by Sam. “Have you asked her yet?” asked Sam.
“No, I was thinking about just asking her at the dance instead of before it,” said Jack. They sat in silence for the rest of lunch. Jacks went to his last two classes and then met up with Sam at the front of the school
“Umm, I asked Ava,” said Sam.
“I had no idea that you liked her, ” said Jack with a surprised look on his face. Ava was a girl that went to the same school and she was a cheerleader and she was very gorgeous.
“She said yes,” exclaimed Sam with a big grin.
“That cool bro,” said Jack. Jack was secretly jealous. They sat there silently for the rest of the bus ride. Jack got home and opened the door to his bedroom. He jumped on his computer and finished up some homework.
“Hey Jack, I'm home” said Lauren, who was his mom. Could have looked at his clock and noticed it was six o’clock. The dance started at six thirty so he needed to quickly get dressed. He put on a dress shirt with some pants. He went into his bathroom and combed his hair over and brushed his teeth. He washed his mouth out with mouthwash and quickly put on some cologne.
“Umm, mom could you take me to the dance?” asked Jack “it starts at six thirty and it's at my school.”
“Sure honey” answered his mom. Jack noticed that his mom had bags under her eyes and looked pretty tired.
“You actually don't need to take me if you're too tired,” said Jack, feeling guilty for asking when his mom got home from a full day of work.
“I’m fine” said his mom “You look very handsome.”
“Thanks mom,” said Jack. They walked out the front door and got into their car. The drive to the dance was quiet because he was quite nervous. They got to the school, and he got out of the car.
His mom rolled down the window. “Bye Jack” she said.
“Bye mom” he said, turning around and waving his mom goodbye. He walked into the school and to the gym where the dance was happening. He got to the pay table
“It is going to be five dollars to get in,” said the person at the table. Jack handed the person a five dollar bill and got a stamp on his hand. He walked into the gym and was met with loud music and people dancing. The gym was almost full and was decorated with a spring theme in mind. There were green balloons scattered around and a couple banners. He spotted Sam so he went over to him quickly
“Wassup man” said Sam
“Sup” said Jack, they quickly did their little handshake “has there already been a slow song.”
“No, I don't think so,” said Sam. Right as Sam finished his sentence a slow song came on, It was “Lover" by Taylor swift.
“Isn’t Olivia like a Swiftie or something” said Jack
“Yeah, I think so,” said Sam. “I'm going to go find Ava” Sam walked off to go find Ava. Jack looked around trying to spot Olivia. Jack discovered that she wasn’t there so he just stayed against the wall for the entirety of the slow song. He was kind of disappointed. She said she was going to be there but she wasn’t there. Sam walked back to jack.
“How did it go” asked Jack
“It was awesome” exclaimed Sam “Did you ask Olivia?”
“I looked for her but she wasn’t here” said Jack with a hurt and confused look on his face “she said she was going to be here.”
“Darn” said Sam ”that's sad.”
“I'm going go to the bathroom real quick” said Jack. He walked out of the gym and went into the Mens bathroom. When he came back out he saw Olivia walking into the gym. She was wearing a bright blue dress and an emerald necklace that went perfectly with her brown skin tone. Her hair was in braids and looked absolutely stunning. Jack thought she was the most beautiful girl he had ever seen. He walked into the gym and went to Sam.
“Olivia finally showed up” said jack with a very happy smile on his face
“That's cool” said Sam “Are you going ask her to dance at the next slow song.”
“Yes of course” said Jack. As Jack waited for the next slow song to play he went and moshed in the mosh pit in the center of the gym. The next slow song started playing a couple minutes later and he got out of the center of the gym and went to find Olivia, the girl he was going to ask. He finally spotted her and walked up to her surrounded by a bunch of her friends.
“Will you dance with me Olivia?” asked Jack.
“Yes, I would love to,” answered Olivia. She put her hand on his shoulder, and he put his on her waist. They swayed back and forth. At first, they were tense and as the song progressed they started to loosen up, getting comfortable with each other. The song ended and they stepped apart
“Will you come and dance with me at the next slow song too?” asked Olivia.
“Yes, I will,” said Jack. He went and met up with Sam again.
”Did you dance with her” asked Sam
“Yes, it was the best slow dance I've ever had,” said Jack “did you dance with Ava again?”
“No, she was dancing with a guy from tenth grade,” Sam said sadly.
“That's a bummer” said Jack
“Yeah, I thought she actually liked me but she does” said Sam “It’s not really surprising; that's what all popular girls are like; they just want attention”
“Yup” said Jack. They went to the snack table and got a cookie. Jack felt like the time in between the slow songs were sped up because it felt like a couple minutes later the next slow song played. He went out to find Olivia again.
“Hey, Olivia,” said Jack, “I’m here.” They got into the same dancing position but this time they were a little closer together. There was absolutely no tension between them. All the sounds slowly disappeared as Jack focused on Olivia. He focused on her dark brown eyes. It felt like they were in their own universe dancing together completely alone. The slow song finished and they parted and Jack went to Sam again.
“How was it ” asked Sam
“Absolutely perfect,” said Jack.
“I danced with Evelyn” said Sam ”It was pretty great.” A quick upbeat song turned on and a mosh pit formed in the middle of the gym. Jack pulled Sam into the mosh pit and jumped to the beat of the music like everybody else was doing. Just like before the time in between the slow song went by quickly.
“This is going to be the last song of the night” announced the DJ over the speaker. Jack rushed to find Olivia.
“Will you dance with me again?” asked Jack.
“Yes,“ said Olivia. They got into the familiar slow dancing position but a little closer than last time. When the slow song ended, Olivia stepped up on her tippy toes and pecked him on the cheek. Jack started blushing like crazy. Jack kissed her back but this time it was on the lips. It felt like the kiss lasted forever. They parted.
“Thank you Jack,” said Olivia “Thank you.”
“Yeah, see you tomorrow,” said Jack. That was the first kiss that both of
them had. They left the dance floor forever changed.
