Fiction Sad

A father traced the contours of the weathered bench, immersing himself in its history, a witness to countless memories. With its views of a serene lake beneath the setting sun, the park carried a narrative of a father and daughter's story, filled with laughter, joyous picnics, and lively banter. The grooves in the wood told tales of their bond.

With the crisp autumn breeze came the fragrance of fallen leaves as it brushed against his skin. The breeze reminded him of the changing seasons and the passage of time since the unimaginable loss. The water reflected a man consumed by internal pain. While calm on the surface, ripples mirrored the waves of anguish coursing through him, drowning in the heartache of losing his daughter too soon.

In the eyes of friends and family, he came off as "the strong one," but here, the father shed the resilient mask. The misery weighed on him like a heavy cloak, refusing to be shaken off.

With each breath synchronizing with the soft wind, the burden he carried lightened, if only for a fleeting moment. Yet, he still bore a pain too deep to conceal. In the solitude, vulnerability became his silent partner as grief, once suppressed, now engulfed him. The veil he crafted to shield others gave away to the landscape of loss and longing.

Often he would find himself standing at the doorway to her room, of which he changed nothing, leaving it frozen in time, holding traces of the life she lived. The dreams she wove for her future now lay shattered, broken pieces of her aspirations scattered like fragile glass.

Sorrow pressed upon him with a crushing force, extinguishing not only his spirit, but the essence of his being. Every corner of their home whispered her name, playing as a symphony, in the background.

In the hushed stillness, as he searched for comfort on the familiar bench, an unexpected tingling overcame him. Goosebumps traced a path from his legs to his arms, a shiver, not born of fear, but of a presence separate from this realm. The cool autumn air now hummed with an inexplicable warmth.

The father scanned the surroundings for the source, when a subtle sensation grazed him, as though an unseen hand reached out and touched him, stirring the depths of his soul with its  mysterious allure.

When daylight neared its end, a silhouette materialized with an uncanny resemblance to his beloved daughter.

The barriers between them, dissolved. Within his mind, the image of her radiant smile persisted, a beacon of light amidst the shadows, a timeless portrait, infused with the vibrant essence of her spirit.

This time, it wasn't a mere memory. The air crackled with an energy, permeating the space around him.

The spiritual aura intensified, and in a moment of profound completeness, she sat beside him as if she were in the fullness of life.

The father reached out to touch the illusion, expecting it to vanish like a dream. Instead, his fingers brushed against her hand.

A gentleness enveloped him, both ethereal and palpable, spanning the divide between the living and the departed.

The mystery of their connection was beyond him, leaving him awestruck by the enigma of their reunion.

Tears glistened in the corners of the father's eyes as he leaned forward, his voice a whisper as he uttered, "Is it you? Are you here with me?" With longing and hope, he awaited her response. The daughter nodded, her affirmation.

In the enchanting moment, father and daughter sat as the two souls reconnected.

Together, they reminisced about the past, the father told the story of the day she came into the world, recounting the instantaneous, unconditional love filling his heart. Stories were shared of their adventures, from carefree days exploring nature to quiet evenings spent lost in the pages of their favorite books.

The pair recalled laughter echoing through the halls of their home, moments of joy, and spoke of tears shed in times of sorrow.

The radiant figure beside him listened with sublime attentiveness, her eyes alight with a depth of understanding that transcended human comprehension. Together, they delved into their past, threads of memory weaving seamlessly into the cosmic patchwork of existence.

In her revelation, the daughter unfurled a breathtaking tapestry of the afterlife's splendors, her words brushing vivid strokes across his imagination. With a voice dancing like stardust, she conjured images of celestial landscapes, each scene a kaleidoscope of colors unseen by mortal eyes.

Amazement shown on her face as she told of skies ablaze with hues that defied description. Like an artist, she painted pictures of eternal sunsets, inviting the soul to surrender to their mesmerizing embrace and lose itself in the infinite expanse of the heavens. A place with no fear, pain, or suffering, In her eloquence, she conveyed a truth of indescribable wonders.

"It hasn't been so wonderful here since you have been gone," the father confessed.

His words were laden with the ache of a heart missing its essential beat. Each day he continued on a journey through a barren expanse of solitude, where her absence reverberated like distant echoes in a desolate landscape. The mere mention of her absence cast shadows over the brightest of lights.

Profound silence filled  the spaces she used to occupy. The morning sunrise brought the cruel realization that she wouldn’t be there. Every sunset transforming the sky was a reminder of the incomparable brilliance she brought to his life, placing a layer of muted tones in comparison to her vibrant essence.

The daughter sighed, her gaze lingering on the blend of sadness and happiness reflecting in his eyes. Sensing his mixed emotions, she presented him with a choice: he may opt for her return to this life as if she had never departed, or embrace these fleeting moments together, granted to them, before bidding her a heartfelt farewell to heaven.

She informed him, if he chose to keep her here, she would remain unable to return to heaven, even after her time in this life ended.

The father sat in silence, his mind inundated with milestones yet to come, with visions of father-daughter dances, he imagined walking her down the aisle on her wedding day and meeting his grandchildren. These thoughts infused him with radiance, casting a luminous clarity upon him that should have rendered the choice effortless.

Beneath this newfound clarity lay a weight of responsibility. How could he tether her to the confines of this mortal realm when she spoke with such elation of the paradise awaiting? The gravity of the decision pressed down on him and though he didn't the know the reason, the burden of making it rested on his shoulders.

No words were exchanged, but her eyes conveyed the promise that she would accept whatever choice he made. There was comfort in their connection, allowing her to believe everything would be ok. With every passing moment, her patient companionship became a reassurance.

The father gazed at his daughter as the hues of the sun as it lowered in the sky adorned her. They found themselves entangled in the delicate dance between holding on and letting go. A pull transcending mortality tugged at him as memories of her irreplaceable joy flooded his thoughts.

Without any doubt, he believed she would understand his decision for her to stay. Regardless, he had never seen such pure happiness in anyone's eyes when she talked of the heavenly place.

“I want you to stay,” he began.

The daughter nodded, her eyes reflecting with a bittersweet smile.

Before she could express understanding, he continued.

"But you have to go back to heaven," he whispered, his voice carrying a mixture of sorrow and profound love. "Find the serenity you told me of and trust that you will forever be a part of my heart. Living my life as if you were here, will make me the best person I can be and take comfort knowing someday we'll be together again."

As they stood and embraced, he wished to have stayed in that moment forever. Releasing her, he understood, no amount of time would be enough.

She spoke to him with a soothing cadence far beyond her years, offering reassurance.

"Live your life, Dad and know that your feelings matter. You are important too. Let love fill your sails and happiness be your compass. Remember, tears are not weakness; rather a cleansing rain that water the seeds of resilience and pave the way to healing. Things will become better."

Pausing, she gazed at him, seeing through the facade of strength and sensing a sadness in his eyes, born from having to say goodbye to her go again.

"Forever I will treasure the love we shared and the memories we created. Thank you for letting me go. After you've lived a long, fulfilling life, we will reunite. And that time, it will be eternal," she assured him.

With those words, she hugged him once more, wrapping him in a final embrace.

Walking away, she turned around and smiled.

Then, in perfect synchronization, she faded away as the sun set.

About the Creation of this short story A while back, I found myself, immersed in solitude with my thoughts. Engrossed in a solitary game of "would you rather." Lost in contemplation, I began thinking of scenarios where it would be almost impossible to choose. But you have too. That's the rules of the game. As my mind wandered to the loved ones we've lost in recent years, I couldn't escape the thought of the devastating emotions that accompany the passing of someone we hold dear. A feeling too many people have felt. As my thoughts continue...
