African American American Romance

It had been a long day for Lily at work, she is the lead neurosurgeon at the private hospital she works at and she had just finished a 19-hour brain surgery where she and her team had to separate a set of conjoined twins and all she could think of was getting home, taking a shower and going to bed. She was too tired to drive so he had to take an uber home, when the driver pulled over in front of her house, she was surprised to see Eric’s car parked in front of it, she looked at her watch and it was just 7pm and this was unusual considering he always came back home very late and had been doing so for about two weeks. She quietly hoped and prayed that he was entertaining a guest so she could just go to her bedroom and sleep off because that was all she needed so she decided to pass the back of the house that way she didn’t have to see him at all. When she got to the back door before she entered the house she took of her shoes and figured she would just tiptoe through the kitchen she knew Eric would know she was the one but at least the guest wouldn’t be aware of her presence, as she tip-toed lazily across the kitchen exhausted she was halted by Eric who she didn’t notice had entered the kitchen and had been obviously been watching her

“Hey”. She halted took a deep breath and turned around to look at him. He was still wearing his work clothes, so it was obvious that he had just gotten home as well, or he wasn’t staying long which ever one it was she didn’t really care.

“Hey”. She replied in an exhausted and unenthusiastic tone.

“Long day?” he said noticing the tired look in her eyes and taking in how beautiful she looked in her scrubs despite her obvious exhaustion.

“Yeah, 19-hour long surgery thankfully it was successful”.

“Good to hear, I was hoping we could talk?”. He had a sincere tone in his voice that she hadn’t heard in a while considering the only time, they did talk in the last weeks was to yell at each other.

“Eric I’m too tired to argue okay so if you want to scream at me, you can do that tomorrow when I’ve had some sleep but please, I just want to take a bath and go to bed”. She turned around to leave but Eric didn’t want to fight he wanted to clear things up and apologize to her

“I don’t want to fight” he said as he slowly walked towards her, I just want to talk and if we can’t do that today because you are tired maybe we can tomorrow”. Lily looked at him he was now standing close enough for her to see the sincerity in his eyes as well, she was really exhausted but the arguments they had been having was way more tiring than how she felt and despite not wanting to admit it to herself she had missed her husband.

She dropped her handbag on the kitchen counter let out another loud sigh

“Okay, I’m listening”.

“Thank you” Eric said with relief in his voice, he was silent for a moment just starring at Lily trying to figure out what the right words to say would be, it was funny he had played this scenario in his head over again throughout the day and now he was tongue tied especially because he knew he had been unfair to her. He let out a loud sigh

“I’m so sorry for everything, for accusing you and for not believing you my mum confessed everything to me I should have believed you its just…….” He looked at her and she now had a blank expression on her face waiting for him to continue his statement.

“It's just what Eric?” she said in a dry tone.

“She is my mum”. He regretted it as soon as he said it, but he knew he couldn’t take it back.

“And I am your wife?”.

“I didn’t mean it that way, I just mean she is my mother I didn’t think she would accuse you like that”. Lily just chuckled in disbelief and just shook her head “You and I know that your mum has never liked me so while you are surprised she would do something like this I’m not, you always made it seem like your mum not liking me was a minor issue despite the side comments, the way she like to berate me in front of people” tears had started to build up in her eyes as she replayed all the things his mum had done to her, Eric tried to go closer to her to comfort her but she just moved away and halted him with her hand she took a deep breath in order to restrain herself from crying. “You should have trusted me when I told you I would never cheat on you, I have eyes for only you I have proved that since we started dating, I didn’t deserve the way you have treated me these past weeks all it took was for your mum to accuse me with a picture of me hugging John”

“You have to understand how it looked”.

“I told you it was just an innocent hug; he lost his sister”. Eric had a guilty look in his face, he knew he should have trusted.

There was silence in the kitchen again, they just starred at each other waiting for the other person to say something, finally Eric breaks the silence “I’m so sorry Strawberry”. Lily loved when he called her that. “I am really sorry; I don’t want to fight anymore I want to make it up to you in any way I can, in any way you want”. Eric was now inches away from Lily starring into her blue eyes and Lily felt like he was looking into her soul it made her realize just how much she missed him and how much she longed to be in his arms again her mouth was now subconsciously slightly open and her breath had picked up, she had a very lustful and hungry look in her eyes, Eric had noticed these and had the same hungry look in his eyes but he wasn’t going to make the next move until she did, he was the one who was wrong and he didn’t want to ruin his apology by being too forward and presumptuous. After what felt like forever like she had come out of a trance that had taken all she had to get out off she finally spoke

“I don’t want to fight any more, I just need some sleep and we can talk more about this tomorrow”. He nodded.

“Good night”. Lily said as she took her bag from the counter and made her way upstairs.

“Good night strawberry”. Eric said feeling

The next morning Lily woke up to find Eric making pancakes in the kitchen

“Good morning” she says from behind Eric, he turns and gives her a smile

“Morning Strawberry, sleep well?”

“Yes, I did”. Lily says with a warm. “Need some help?”

“No, I got it, I already set the table, all you have to do is sit and wait for me to bring your breakfast”. Lily just nodded and went to the dinning area where she found a bouquet of her favorite flowers, donuts and coffee from her favorite bakery. Eric set the pancakes on the table and with maple syrup and apple juice.

“Thank you for all this, you really didn’t have to”.  Lily said as she started to eat her pancakes considering she didn’t have dinner the last night, so she was hungry.

“Do you have plans today?”. Eric asked Lily as she was engrossed in her breakfast.

“Nothing, I would probably just sleep all the rest of the day and pray I don’t get a call from the hospital.”

“I was hoping I could take you out for dinner in your favorite place, if you’d like”. Lily wanted very much to say yes but she didn’t feel like going out, she just wanted to stay in.

“Maybe tomorrow I’d rather just stay in today”. Eric had a disappointed look on his face that he tried to hide.

“Movie night then, we haven’t had that in a while”. Eric asked Lily.

“Yes, I would love that, you should probably choose the movie this time seeing as you sleep off during my movies most of the time”. They both chuckled lightly. After breakfast they cleared the table Eric said he would do the dishes, but Lily decided she would help before she went back to sleep, as they put the plates in the washing machine and cleared the kitchen they started talking, and reminiscing, they were talking about one of their adventures they had when they were still dating the story was so funny that they couldn’t stop laughing when Lily blurted out

“I’ve missed you Babe”. Eric couldn’t contain his smile he knew what she meant and he had also missed her too more than she knew and before Eric could say anything she had found her way to him and they were kissing passionately.

The plot was amazing, so was the way it was written, I found the characters realistic and layered, but there were parts where I thought you could use an extra comma or two. Other than that, it was a great read, well done!
