“Hi, Jamal! Hi, Mark!”
“Hey, Bobby!”
“Hey, Jessica, is that a new dice bag?”
“Yeah, it’s the bag my sister’s Tarot cards came in. She let me have it.”
“Hey, Tony, glad you could make it! I thought you were grounded.”
“I was, but that was last week. I’m back!”
“Hey, Dana. Did you remember your character sheet this time?”
“Yeah, and I already added all the XP from the last session.”
“Now that everybody’s here, let’s get back to where we left off. We were at the entrance to this dungeon. You weren’t here last week, Tony, but we just got the quest to find this enchanted lyre, which is supposed to be in here somewhere. First I want everyone to roll for Perception.”
“I got a one.”
“Well, you didn’t see a damn thing. Anyone else?”
“Twelve.”
“Eight.”
“Seven.”
“Four.”
“Okay, so Tony, you notice a second door to the right. It’s partially covered in ivy and looks like it hasn’t been opened in years.”
“I’m going to try to open it.”
“Hang on! Shouldn’t somebody make sure it isn’t booby-trapped?”
“Dana has a good point. I am going to check for traps.”
“Roll for it”
“Natural twenty!”
“There are no traps that you can detect.”
“It’s safe, everyone!”
“The door seems stuck.”
“Krong, can you open it?”
“Do I have to roll for it, or can I just try?”
“Roll a Strength check.”
“I got a six. With my modifiers, that gives me a total of twenty.”
“With great effort, you are able to open the door. You can see nothing but blackness inside.”
“Does anyone have a torch?”
“Let me check my Bag of Holding; I’m pretty sure I have a couple torches in here.”
“One day you’re going to pull a rabbit out of that thing and I’m gonna laugh my ass off.”
“Found them! I have three. Jessica, you grab one. I’ll use one, and Tony can use the other.”
“You all enter a room about four yards square. There is a door immediately opposite you, and another door in the wall to your left. In the middle of the room is a huge chest and a table. On the table is a bottle of wine and two glasses. There is wine in one of the glasses, and a residue of wine at the bottom of the other glass. Other than that, the room is completely empty. The walls are bare stone.”
“I want to search the room for traps.”
“Roll it.”
“Nine.”
“You detect a small cantrip on the door just across from the entrance. Do you want to try to disarm it?’
“Yeah. I have a modifier….five, plus the mod, gives me ten.”
“You are able to successfully disarm the trap. Mark, what do you want to do?”
“I want to check out this chest. Is it locked?”
“Examine it and find out.”
“Okay. I examine the chest.”
“Guess what, guys? It’s a mimic! Everyone roll for Initiative.”
“Seventeen.”
“Thirteen.”
“I got a seventeen, too.”
“Sixteen.”
“Nine.”
“Okay, Mark and Tony, you two were the first to react. Mark?”
“I pull out my greatsword.”
“Good start. Tony?”
“I pull out my short sword.”
“Jessica, you’re next. What do you do?”
“I retreat to the far corner of the room, ready to throw healing spells.”
“Now Jamal.”
“I draw my poisoned blade.”
“The mimic attacks, going for Mark first. See if you can dodge it.”
“One. Oh, shit!”
“It gets your leg. You lose eight HP.”
“I can heal that!”
“While Latavia is healing Krong, the mimic next goes after Tony. What do you want to do? You have had some more time to react.”
“I am going to attack the mimic with my sword. I rolled a thirteen.”
“Hit. Roll for damage.”
“Ten. With an enchanted elven sword modifier. So fifteen.”
“The mimic is down fifteen HP. Jamal, what do you want to do?”
“I want to attack the mimic. I have poison that works on everything.”
“Roll for the attack, and then roll for damage.”
“I got a twenty. For immediate damage, I rolled a five, but the mimic loses two hit points per round because of the poison.”
“Got it. Dana, what do you want to do?”
“I want to cast an Entanglement spell on the mimic.”
“Roll it.”
“Twelve. With a plus two modifier because the mimic is made of wood.”
“No, it isn’t. It’s a monster. It’s made of monster. The wood is just a disguise.”
“I always thought they were made of wood.”
“So twelve?”
“I guess so.”
“The spell hits. The mimic is now entangled. Is Krong healed?”
“Yeah, Latavia took care of it while the monster was dealing with Erryn and Lewellyn and Demeria. I want to attack.”
“Roll ‘em.”
“Fourteen for the hit. Six and six for damage.”
“The mimic is down twelve more HP. And now two more because of Jamal’s poison. It’s still entangled so it can’t attack. Tony, it’s your turn. What do you want to do?”
“I’m going after it with my sword again. And I roll…..twelve!”
“Hit. Roll for damage.”
“Eight, plus the modifer, so thirteen.”
“The mimic is almost dead. Jamal, do you want to finish it off?”
“Yeah, I go after it with my knife again. But I only rolled a four.”
“You missed and only cut away some of the Entanglement vines. Not enough for it to get free, though. Dana?”
“I just smack it with my staff.”
“Does that thing even do damage? You almost never use it.”
“It only deals one d-ten, so I usually stick with my spells. I rolled a ten. And a four for damage.”
“Well, the mimic is dead. Everyone give yourselves three hundred fifty experience points for this fight.”
“Bobby, who are you talking to?”
“Nobody, Mom. Just talking to myself, playing some D and D.”
“Well, dinner’s almost ready, so wrap it up and go wash your hands.”
“Okay, everyone, let’s call it for now, but we’ll pick back up on Saturday.”
