Hey Ma,

You was right. I shoulda listened. I know that don’t sound like me. I never thought this could happen to me. You tried to tell me. All that stuff you tried to tell me. I ain’t never listened when I should have. 

Its like that time when me and Lisa was kids. You told me, “Jess, don’t touch that cookie sheet! It’s hot.” I kept pretending like I didn’t hear ya. “Jess, don’t touch that cookie sheet!” Kept tryna touch it, even though it was fresh outta the oven. “Alright, Jess, if you so smart, go ahead and touch it.” And course, you was right. Like always, you was right. 

How is Lisa doin? I hope she ain’t still with that asshole. Would be something if Gary used me to weasel back in. She ain’t never listen neither. That guy is bad news, Ma. Ain’t nothing gonna change my mind about him. You keep an eye on her for me. Shoulda busted his teeth out when I had the chance. If he gets too rowdy, call up Frankie and George. They know how to scare Gary away. 

Look Ma, I’m real sorry about all this. I mean it. I shoulda listened to ya and I didn’t. I’m real glad we get to talk again though. I know how much you hate tech, so I can’t hardly believe this is happening. I’m glad ya did too. I wanna know how that house is doin. Did ya finally sell it? I keep tellin ya - it’s too much house for one person, Ma. You gotta get you that place on the coast like you always wanted. Little condo. Big windows. Rocky ocean. And don’t you bring that damn air fryer. That fried stuff is hurtin your heart.

I hate that you mad at me. You should be. I guess the whole idea of this is to ask the hard questions. I shoulda listened to ya. Lemme try to answer your questions.

I dunno how it all started. Prolly that punk from middle school, Andrew Davids. You was right, he was bad news. I ain’t talked to him in over ten years. He ended up with some fancy degree from State. Can you believe that? Me out here hustling and he got some fancy degree. I ain’t even know why he sold to me. Maybe ‘cause his daddy beat him? After Andrew, I got mixed up with K-Roll and his guys. Lisa tried a couple times to get me out. It ain’t never stick. 

I tried two years ago. That church stuff just ain’t for me, Ma. I promise I tried. P Dawg offered me that job at the Shack a few weeks in. The Shack ain’t no good. Lisa said her friend was looking for a job - stay away from P Dawg! Dude is mean and he got the candy you can’t get away from.

I ain’t got a good excuse, Ma. I tried, but shoulda tried harder. Tweek is what got me. P Dawg and his crew ain’t even been there. I hate that you mad.

Dear Jess,

Don’t be tryna scare Frankie and George! Your cousins were there before I even asked for help. The move ain’t too bad - all things considered. Frankie helped me sell what I had on his phone and through yard sales and stuff. Only kept that lazy boy you used to love, the one with the big soda stain on it. It’s the comfiest. You use to fall asleep in it when you was little and it was raining. 

You will also be happy to know that Gary is GONE. After I moved out here, Lisa decided she was done with him for good. She’s looking at jobs around here. Wants to come take care of me or something. I guess I should probably tell ya - you seem to find these things out anyway - I gotta doc appointment later this week. Had my annual and they says my weight ain’t good and its making my heart not good. Lisa is mad at me. Says I was using my sadness for you as an excuse not to take care of myself. Maybe she’s right. 

Oh! Can’t believe I forgot. She got me a puppy! Can you believe it? Would it be weird to send you pictures of him? I named him Duke on account of him really liking jazz music. It’s the only way the little monster will nap!
