Giving a Speech in my Dad's class

Written in response to: "I stared at the crowd and told the biggest lie of my life."

Creative Nonfiction Friendship

There was once a family in rural Virginia. When the husband became a father, they went on a family trip, just the three. The baby girl would laugh and gurgle. She developed a appitite to a very specific baby food. The mother quickly grew tired of trying to breast feed the baby adnd the family would stock up on this specific baby food for it was hard to buy. The first winter arrived and it rained and rained. They family was poor and often warmed up with blankets staring at the T.V. during the evening, each deep in thoughts. They espicially enjoyed citcom but also watching the news and soap operas. The dad was a French teacher and the mother a Doctor. The girl grew up to be beautiful and smart. She will grow to be a Doctor, like her mom. The school she went to was known to be tough for people from rural Virginia. The only reason that the family lived their was that the house was passed down by the father's family tree. The condition to selling the house was to live in it for five years. That was the will presented to them by his parents. On the day their daughter turned five the mother brought a cake and invited some friends. while the kids were running around, the women were talking. "Do the right thing, said one. If it was up to me I'd sell it and move." " I don't want to make it hard for her , she said." The more she thought about it, the more it made sense. They were managing OK and in no need for cash. Dan, the father, was the one that wanted to sell. He detested anything to do with his past and where he had to grow up. "All my family and friends left. We can find better jobs out in the city." The arguments seemed to rip the family to half. The women of the family wanted to stay. "I feel like we're losing him" said her mother."Oh my dear child". she would always leave food in the refrigurato, and always tried to be open with her. The family enjoyed friends they have worked very hard to trust. Some divorced and some left. Leaving everything is something I always frowned upon she said to her daughter, seating next to her having dinner. I am trying my best to keep this Family safe and he comes in with his ideas Like a whirlwind." "Why does he want to leave" she asked her face full with curiousity." Oh my love, he's not thinking streight. To him it's a adventure. Like Columbus discovering a new continent. Perhaps he doesn't feel happy, and running away won't help, it will just make everything worse." The little girl's friends wanted to know everything about the outside world. To her, It was obvious she's born here , get married here and die here. The world was too big. The vacations were spent helping her family, while her sister's either did the same or were busy raising family of their own. "It's the same, but bigger" she answered. Traveling is when you want to see important people, people that are old and too tired to come and see you. That's why we travel. My mother didn't grow up here, She met my father when learning in the same campus. She fell for him imidiatly. It was love in first sight. Maybe if they didn't rush and marry so quickly, my father wouldn't be so angry all the time. When we sit down for dinner my parents are so quiet, I don't understand how they are so different in so many ways but enjoy each others company well. My dad likes to meet friends and workout and chat with colleges at school. They always hike together on weekends and go out for to have a good time. When he talks about France his face lits up. The house we live in now is here because my dad came here to study english. I'm sure he's happy here. The girl approached the board. It was a French class where they learned the language. Her father was the teacher and always made her feel embaressed. After she shuffled the pages a bit she said:" I like to come to French classes. I want to thank my dad for being such a wonderful teacher and person. He always help around the house and Everyone loves him. This is what happens when I get up and say the biggest lie of my life to a crowd." once again her friend gave her a thumbs up.

When school was over that day the girl was enjoying a meal, a late Lunch. She was old enough to work after school and enjoyed spending money. While picking on her sandwitch and taking out all the oniouns, She cintemplated on the mysterious of life. It was still early and she can still make it to the bus. Throwing the wrappers away she smiled to herself as she recalled that French class thanking her father of being the best father she knows. Their are better fathers and their are worst fathers, mine is just right enough for me. When I grow up I want to be like my father, because I'm OK right now and I feel good about it. That's exactly what I want my kids to feel. Safe and secure. Because my dad wasn't good at sharing his feeling or even complimenting my mother. They argued alot when I was young and I had nightmares. I was very angry at my father because it felt like he's being selfish when he never seemed to smile at me. Yes I was very angry. But anger isn't the solution. Because what I feel layes below that "anger". Now that I've grown I see the error. I feel that I'm part of something bigger than myself and that my parents protected me, made me feel secure not alienated. When my parents listened but couldn't share any useful advice, I get it. My parents were cool in their way and I'm going to be cool in my way.

Coming to terms with your upbringing and accepting your parents for who they are is a profound topic, well worth exploring. That said, I think your story could benefit from some grammar corrections and proofreading. Perhaps it's because you followed this week's contest instructions a little too closely.
