Voicemail

"Hey Jules. It’s me. I didn’t want to write this, but maybe it will make everything easier. I found a box. In the back of the closet. Dad kept everything. There was things like letters, photos, even that voicemail from you he said he deleted. But there was more… Jules, there were letters from someone named Evelyn. They were dating almost right after Mom died. He wasn’t alone like we thought. And one of them… one said she was your real mom. I don’t know what that means yet, but I’m digging. I’ll call you tomorrow. I just… I’m sorry."

Jules: Ben. Call me. Now.

Jules: Why aren't you answering?

Jules: Please. This is not funny.

Jules: I'm at your house. Where are you?

Subject: Hi

If you're reading this, Ben must have found the letters. I had always hoped I’d get to tell you in person, but your father feared it would only confuse you. You were his whole world.

I am your mother. I gave you to your father because I wasn’t really in a place to raise you. Not yet. He raised you well, I see that. But I’ve watched from a distance, all these years.

I know you're angry. I would be too. But I need to explain everything. Please — come to 134 West Rowan Street. Tomorrow at 3. I’ll be there.

Jules. Listen to me. Evelyn is not who she said she was. I did some digging and she died 13 years ago. I do not know who she is or what she wants from you but do not even interact with her. Please. You need to get out of there right now.

TEXT MESSAGE

Jules: She said she's Claire. not Evelyn. Whats going on?

Jules: Ben.

Jules: Ben?

Ben: WHAT? Claire Ryan? Our AUNT? She's been missing for years.

Jules: Oh. She said she was in hiding or something.

Ben: Oh

Jules: She said dad helped her.

Jules,

If you are reading this, then I’ve failed to keep things buried. Your father wasn’t just your dad. He was a courier — for things people weren’t supposed to know. Documents. Secrets. He kept some for leverage. Evelyn was one of them.

The truth is: you were adopted, yes. But your biological mother was never told you survived. She thought you died. Evelyn worked for the people who made sure of that.

Please leave this alone. There are others who don’t want you knowing any of this.

But if you must keep digging — don’t trust the man who says he’s Ben.

Best,

Claire

If I go missing…

I’m leaving this here. The folder I found has Dad’s handwriting — but some pages are missing. Claire took something before she left. One of the papers said “Project Aegis.” I don’t know what it means.

Ben is coming. I don’t know if I can trust him. I want to — I have to — but I don’t know who’s real anymore.

If you’re hearing this, Jules, I couldn’t get to you in time. The people after your father never stopped searching. Project Aegis was a government asset protection scheme gone wrong. Your father turned against them. You and Ben were leverage. But if your Ben doesn’t have the scar on his left shoulder… he isn’t your brother.
