Fiction Sad Urban Fantasy

I looked out the window scanning the city. The sky was filled of soft reds and pinks and purples. It was always like this. Neither day nor night. Always stuck in between the two. Eternally.

It always surprised me, even after nearly a decade of me living her in the city. I wonder how long it will take me to get used to the absence of the moon and the sun. I've grown to miss the presence of the two.

I missed the bright yellow light of the sun shining down on me, bathing me in its warmth. The annoyance I felt when I stared at it. I missed the calming light of nothingness the moon gave, how it lit everything and you could stare at it forever. I took a deep breath as I watched the city folk come out of their houses. There was an unusual pep in their step.

As I looked closer and closer, I realized what was happening. There was to be a city announcement. "Karikt-" A quiet voice called out to me. I blinked, turning around.

"Asimkt." I respond. Kui looked at me with a sense of, despair. Asimkt took a breath before shoving kuipers hands into kuipers pockets. "You should go.. To the meeting." Kui said. Kuipers voice was always quiet, barely above a whisper. I learnt to recognize it, but now, for some reason I had a hard time hearing.

"What do you mean Asimkt?-" Kui shook kuipers head.

"Never mind. Let's go."

I stood against the light pole, arms folded. I stared at the crowds of people, short and tall. Skinny and not, black and white and everyone else. We had a wide variety of people here. Including gossipers. The gossipers had spread word that there's someone new in the city.

Many things are said, in our city. The majority are lies, but when it comes to the arrival of someone.. Lies are forbidden. It's not a written law by the government, but rather a societal law. A structure. And because of this, when all the gossipers whispered here and there of someone, we've all gathered here.

In the city square.

It seemed to be forever until our counsel appeared, walking up to a higher place in the air. I shoved my hands into my pockets, meeting the eyes of my mother: Ahn'Noelkt. Just like always, her eyes were cold and unforgiving. However, the closer I looked, the more I noticed something.

There was fear in her eyes.

I felt my own eyes widen with such a feeling, my jaw clench.

I inhaled deeply, counting to ten before slowly breathing out. I counted to ten before I breathed in again. I eyed my mother, and soon enough she did the same as I. I gave her a small nod before moving my gaze to the other members of the counsel.

There weren't as many of them since the Old One's death, only five, including my mother, remained of the eleven.

My mother, Ahn'Noelkt, a woman of great height is six foot six, the youngest of the counsel. Her hair is a smooth tree brown while mine's a wicked dirt brown, wild and untamed. Her skin is pale, and mine is sick. Her eyes are a lovely calming blue, and mine are the depths of the sea.

Ahn'Lilakt is the second youngest, another woman. However unlike my mother, Ahn'Lilakt is small, four foot seven. Her hair is a calm fiery red, her skin is that of dried grass and her eyes are are as if the forest moss has climbed into them. Strange and foriegn, unknown.

Ahn'Willkt was the only man of the counsel, he was five foot eleven. His hair was as dark as the night sky, wild and untamed like my own hair. His skin was a mix of white and pink, healthier than mine. His eyes were a dark bloody red, sinking into anyone who dared to make eye contact with him.

Ahn'Sagkt was someone who always seemed to grow and shrink, xe wore cloaks and never let anyone see xyr body. Xyr hair was a smooth grey, reaching down towards xyr waist. Xyr eyes, like the rest of xyr body, was hidden. By what? Bandages.

And like Ahn'Sagkt, Ahn'Eskt was as equally as strange. Ahn'Eskt was five foot five, and bald. Ae seemed to wear everything and yet nothing at the same time, ae was a mess to ones sight. Aethe skin was like Ahn'Willkt, white and pink and healthy. Aethe eyes were a foggy black, endless and yet eternal.

Once I remembered their appearances, I looked at my feet, taking a huge breath. I focused back on my mother's gaze.

"Once more," Ahn'Noelkt's voice boomed across the city square. "We have found a new arrival in our lovely city." I gulped. "Unlike last time they will not be spared." I felt my breath go shaky. "They burned our crop shop, our farms for the new Old One soon to be chosen-" Everyone gasped, some even shouted.

I was tense.

It was nym. Shit. Shit it was kuiper.

"And they broke into the room of the counselors." Everyone froze. Very few shouted. I looked up, meeting the eyes of all the members of the counselor. Ahn'Willkt's eyes narrowed in on me. I merely blinked at him though I couldn't help but feel the slimy icky hooks the gossipers spoke of. This is why Ahn'Willkt is feared.

"As all of you know.." Ahn'Willkt's voice eased into the silence. "Harboring a being of such heinous crimes, is worthy of death." His gaze scanned across the crowd of people. Ahn'Sagkt and Ahn'Lilakt were walking across the air, looking down on us all, searching for one filled of intense emotions besides from rage. Ahn'Noelkt found my gaze however.

She knew.

And so did Ahn'Willkt. Ahn'Eskt. Then Ahn'Sagkt and Ahn'Lilakt.

I found myself clenching my jaw. How could I have forgotten the most important structures of our city? Your on your own, don't assist unless you're higher placed, always wait for information. Then there was the gossiping structure.

I broke two structures.

I was higher placed, as Ahn'Noelkt had adopted me, but other than that, I was nothing. Asimkt, please forgive me. Please leave our city. For your mentor.. Is done.
