Contemporary Friendship Romance

"Rita, is everything okay. Did I forget to kiss you goodnight?"

"Open the door immediately, Ernesto. We need to talk."

"I'm here, it's open, what's happening?"

"How could you? Why didn't you tell me?"

"You seem upset. I don't understand."

"I'm not upset; I'm furious! You should have told me!"

"What are you talking about?"

"We did it! We did it, and you said nothing."

"Can you be a little bit more specific?"

"You need details?"

"If you don't mind, it would really help me to know what you are speaking about."

"You think you are at work? Speaking with one of your fellow professors?"

"I think you need to calm down."

"That's not what I need. I thought I could trust you!"

"You can. Why wouldn't you? Did anything happen? Can I help you?"

"Arrggh! I cannot even stare at you."

"Are you sure you are okay? You seem really agitated. Do you want to drink something? Cofee? Tea?"

"I don't want anything from you!"

"But you came here... so you might want something."

"I remember. I know. I remember what happened, what we did..."

"What did we do?"

" Did you think you could hide it? Do you think I am stupid?

"Oh, no, that's not it. Rita, I assure you I have no idea what you are speaking about."

"Ernesto, you took advantage of me!"

"I took what? I took nothing! What are you speaking about, woman?"

"Woman? Really? Do you think you are Tarzan or something? Me, Jane?"

"I think you need to calm down, Rita. I don't know what's happening, but you are not acting normal."

"So, now, I am what? Stupid? And weird?"

"I am not saying that. I am not saying anything like that, Rita…"

"We had sex!"

"No, we didn't."

"Yes, we did. At Marta's wedding."

"Emm.."

"So? Don't you have anything to say?"

"Should I?

"What do you mean?"

"I don't know what to say, so I don't know if I should say anything at all. Rita, I don't remember, really. If you say it happened, I must believe you, but I cannot… I don't know… what do you want from me?"

"I want nothing!"

"But you are here, so you might want something... I'm really sorry,"

"You don't have the right to pity me. I'm a grown-up. I can take care of myself."

"I know you are, I know you can, but still, someone has to do something. You don't speak to your mother or your friends. I am the only one who has seen you and talked to you these months. I've seen you! How do you expect me to say nothing, to feel nothing about it?"

"Why would you even say that? What does that have to do with anything? Why should I speak with my mother about what we did?"

"Not about that; I mean, I don't see you speaking with anyone but me lately."

"And?"

"Is it possible that, because I seem to be the person you speak the most with…"

"Yes?"

"Well, maybe your memories are a little bit twisted."

"What?"

"Isn't it weird that you only remember about such a thing the day after you had a face-off with your ex? And you argued with your mother, and your friends were not there for you… Rita: did you realize I might be your only friend right now?"

"Ernesto, I'm going to be very blunt right now, but you need to know: you're full of it. Do you really think you are so good? Because you aren't, really. You're a rich boy from a rich family who had help at home until the day before yesterday, paid for by your parents! You have a job because your dad arranged it and all your friends are just like you. I don't even know why we are friends... or whatever we are now."

"That's not..."

"Shhh! My turn! You're a spoiled brat who thinks the world revolves around you. We had sex: awesome and dirty and all the things anyone would love to have, and you don't remember because you were drunk as a skunk. We both were, but now I remember, and one day you'll too, and you will regret your stupid speech about my family, friends, and needs. I don't need you, and you need something I cannot give you."

"Rita..."

"I'll go now. I might call you... later, another day."

"Don't!"

"You don't want me to call you?"

"I don't want you to leave."

"Why should I stay?"

"Because I want you to. You don't need me, but I need you."

"You're selfish!"

"Guilty as charged."

"And you don't believe me!"

"That's not what I said. I don't remember."

"You think I dreamt about it?"

"I said I don't remember."

"Has it ever happened to you?"

"To have sex with someone?"

"To forget about having sex with someone. Please, don't play stupid with me, it's annoying like hell. You always do the same. You joke about things you shouldn't; you think you know better; you never consider what it does to the rest of us."

"If I am so bad, why did you stay close? And why were you attracted to me?"

"I am not attracted to you!"

"You say we had sex."

"I said we had sex while we were super drunk. Those are very different things. You're a teacher. You should know the difference: environment matters."

"Because it was during a wedding?"

"Because we were in a bar!"

"So, if it happens in a bar, it does not count, right? That's what you're saying. Words matter."

"You're impossible!"

"I'm being pragmatic. I am listening to you, trying to make sense of this conversation. Please do not blame me for doing what you asked for."

"I asked you to listen to me, to help me to understand what had happened, not to be an ass about it!

"I'm a whole body, brain, and ass included."

"A smart-ass!"

"We're not going to solve this tonight, right?"

"No, I don't think so."

"But we're still friends, isn't it?"

"I'm not sure how to get rid of you. I'm too tired to keep on fighting."

"Are you leaving?"

"I am. I need to sleep..."

"I'm sorry."

"There's no point."

"Will you kiss me goodnight?"
