Fiction Mystery Suspense

This is the story of a report that was never to actually be seen. It was the account of all that happened on a rainy day in August. This is how the story will be shared with those who were able to dig it up and the horror involved in what they read.

August 5th, 2102 8:26pm questioning suspects in the library

A mansion at the edge of town where the murder took place at and trying to piece together the various clues and evidence presented by the detectives and police officers.

As told by most who were present and accounted for, it was more than a simple murder, more like the board game Clue. The owner and the guests were playing murder theater, and when the lights went out it was lights for all who were participating in the game.

The owner, Jack Reisnor, along with his wife Sylvia, and guests listed in alphabetical order. Jeffrey Doltin, Seth Gropon, Miles Graves, Anthony Dollop, Angie Bravon, Jodi Garnett, and Millie Harper. It was these nine people who were meeting for their annual reunion of the night they meet because of another murder that they were all associated by.

Their mutual friend and former classmate, JJ Brillo, had been brutally murdered, in which each of the named individuals were known to have been with or had gone someplace on the evening of August 5th, 2092.

It was stated that these people had been in contact with this individual their demise and so they met on the anniversary of his death.

It was when they would meet in person that all parties would decide to play a game of murder mystery theater. This would be ten years since the fateful night of the event, in which for the last nine years it was meeting and greeting as usual.

Then when the lights went out and the parties had to guess who had done it, none of them woke up. The cleaning lady, Mrs. Martha Matthews, was the one to discover the bodies of all those who had met their own end. The cleaning lady was a long-time maid and keeper of the residence, in their absence.

I am writing down what was told specifically by her, as she tries to recall all that happened before, during and then after, when she called the police about this gruesome turn of events.

question 1: "What did you see when you arrived at the residence and discovered the bodies?

Mrs. Matthews: "I saw the bodies of the owner, his wife and the nine guests who were in the study, all arranged in various parts of the room." "They looked as though they were dead or sleeping."

question 2: "Did you check to see if anyone was alive?"

Mrs. Matthews: "I felt for a pulse and looked for signs of movement." "I then looked for anything that my show what was used to hurt them or kill them, but I was scared that, whomever it was that had done this was either still in the house or might decide to check for any witnesses and possibly do the same thing to me."

question 3: "When did you decide to contact the police?"

Mrs. Matthews: "After I saw the pools of blood under and around the individuals, not sure what to do since they were no longer alive." "I was panicking at this point and was not able to fully understand all that had happened."

question 4: "Mrs. Matthews, where were you this whole time, either prior to the event taking place or after it had happened?"

Mrs. Matthews: "I was heading down the driveway, realizing I had forgotten my cell phone back at the bar." "I was at the bar before coming here."

question 5: "Mrs. Matthews, are you saying you have witnesses to voucher for your whereabouts, during the time of the murder?"

Mrs. Matthews: Yes, I do, and I can voucher for everywhere I was at before, during and after." "Why, do I need to have my attorney present?"

This line of questioning went until all those who were considered possible witness, were one by one dismissed as an unreliable witness or sent home due to them having no useful information.

There was some information that was directly related to the crime, and these were the facts presented as part of the ongoing investigation.

It was clear that two people seen the murder weapon used on the owner and his wife, they were stabbed repeatedly in the chest, back, and neck with a sharp bladed knife, possibly a hunting knife.

Two of the witnesses noticed a single barrel hunting rifle, sitting by the front door. Two of the victims were shot in the face at close range.

Two were strangled with a copper wire, which left flakes of copper on the neck area and some on part of the face below the ears.

The final three people were beaten to death with either a club or a baseball bat. They were beyond recognition, and it would have been easy to identify them, except the same knife used to stab the owner and his wife, was used to remove any traces of fingerprints.

Samples of blood collected and process, show that each victim was either covered in or had blood smeared on their clothing or body or both.

There were defense wounds and marks that indicated all parties were at one time or more trying to fight off their attacker(s).

The women's hair was cut off and uneven, the men were shaved completely. Some of the clothing or costumes were ripped or cut oddly, exposing upper parts of the bodies.

Upon examination of the bodies, there were various scars discovered, along with two men who had prosthetics, one being on the right leg and the other on the left leg. Both men were found to be brothers who had fought in a war, losing them.

At this time, the investigation is ongoing and until other evidence surfaces, this concludes my report of The Reunion Murders dated August 5th, 2102.

The gore was artfully balanced against the Clue references and the detached format. Kind of makes me think about how gross Clue would actually be...

This had such a chilling, old-school murder mystery feel! I loved how you framed it as a detective’s report; it gave the story a documentary style that made the horror feel more real. The mix of Clue-like playfulness with the gruesome details really heightened the tension. The closing note by the detective tied it all together perfectly. Very haunting!
