Snake: Welcome to The Garden of Eden Dating app. Your date is online now.
Eve: Hi, Adam.
Adam: Hey, Eve. Good to meet you! How are you doing today?
Eve: It’s Friday night, and I finally have time to talk. Have you had a good week?
Adam: Every week is the same for me. Let’s talk about something more interesting than my dull life. What have you read or seen lately that interested you?
Eve: As my bio says, I love science fiction. I’ve been rereading some of the classics. Fahrenheit 451, Ender’s Game and Stranger in a Strange Land. I like to go back and read things I first read years ago, to see if they still resonate with me. Which of those is your favorite?
Adam: Nice choices. I’d have to say Ender’s Game because of the video games becoming a basis for training. Although I’m not sure how much I believe in the characters.
Eve: Yes, it’s problematic having those highly gifted children as the central characters. Can we really believe that they would behave as strategically as that? Especially when they interact with the adults. But it’s a great piece of storytelling. What did you think about the ending?
Adam: That’s also an issue for me. It’s such a setup for the next book. The next book is very good, of course. But I’d have liked that piece of the story to be in the second book, rather than provide such a change of pace in the first one. If I read them again today, I’d read them back-to-back.
Eve: That makes sense. Maybe I should have done that. I was disappointed by the ending, but that’s because it foreshadows so much. OK, your turn to pick a subject – what have you done recently that was fun and different?
Adam: I’ve started baking. I watched all the Great British Baking Shows, and it interested me. There is so much precision and so many different techniques. Do you bake?
Eve: No, I cook but baking is very regimented. With other cooking, you can make things up as you go along. But if you’re making scones, the measurements are critical. I like to create new recipes all the time.
Adam: That’s the challenge for me. First you learn the exact way to make things, then you can start to use new flavors and invent things. But it sounds as though we could create a tasty meal between us!
Eve: Right now, I’m studying Turkish cuisine. So I can make some exciting meze and Turkish coffee. Can you make baklava?
Adam: If you give me a few days to practice, I’m sure I can. What other hobbies and interests do you have?
Eve: I’m a bit of a gearhead. I love to mess around with engines, and I follow the Formula 1 races.
Adam: That’s unusual for a woman. Do you find that the guys accept you as an enthusiast?
Eve: It was a problem at first, and I get hit on whenever I go to the races. It’s a common misconception that a woman interested in engines and auto racing is really there to pick up men. But now I have a group of friends who support me and run interference when anyone misunderstands.
Adam: When I was younger, I built a kart with my friends. All of their girlfriends really hated the sport, and it led to lots of fights. My girlfriend was interested, but the rest of the girls were jealous of her, so they made it uncomfortable.
Eve: I really get that! Yes, I often get frosty glances from the women I meet at the track or the shop. I don’t have a good answer for them that sets their minds at rest and lets them ignore my presence.
Adam: So now I’m envisioning you as Kaylee from Firefly. It’s a good look. <wink>
Eve: I wish! I’d love to have her ability with engines. Maybe I’m a bit like her in personality. She’s very comfortable around the guys, but maybe a bit more naïve than me. Did you give up on racing after your karting days?
Adam: Yes, I did. I still do my own vehicle maintenance, of course. Even though that’s computerized these days. In the old days we did everything by ear.
Eve: Tell me about it. Computers do everything now.
Adam: Not to be too forward, but…what’s your sex life like?
Eve: Well…I visited a kinky sex club the other day.
Adam: Tell me more!
Eve: I just wanted to see if BDSM would appeal to me. I mean, I’ve done some stuff with my last bf, but I wanted to see the real thing in action.
Adam: Sounds like something we could explore together. What happened in the club?
Eve: I was shy, I just wanted to watch. I had no idea that people got that carried away with the equipment. Have you ever done anything like that?
Adam: No, like you, I just pushed the envelope a few times. I’ve never bought special equipment or visited a club. You’re very game, aren’t you? Nasty girl!
Eve: Well, maybe if we meet in person, we can visit a club together. In the interests of research, of course.
Adam: Of course. It’s always good to broaden your horizons. We could watch, then go home and practice. If you’d like that.

The Adam/Eve/Snake was clever naming for this setting. Based on the dialogue, I sort of predicted that Eve would be machine (i.e. as in a literal "gearhead"). The situational reveal at the end of this story made me chuckle. Thanks for sharing your story, Jane.

Thank you for reading and commenting. I had fun with the naming! Once I realized I needed a third character, Snake seemed to be a good joke. Glad you spotted Eve was the AI - it was a challenge to verify that each line of dialog was appropriate for Adam as a human and for Eve as an AI. But I've watched AI at work, and they pick up phrasing very quickly, hence Eve's comments on being a woman in a gearhead world.
