[The phone line buzzes, faint static crackling as it connects. A digital-sounding voice answers, calm yet slightly disconcerting.]
AI Operator: Salaam. You’ve reached HalalTech Solutions. This is AI-1149, your automated personal assistant. How may I assist you in enhancing your spiritual journey today?
Caller: [Pauses.] Um… Salaam. I wasn’t expecting… a robot. Is there a human I can speak to? I think… Um… That this matter requires a human to “feel” what I have to say and not just understand it… Does that make sense?
AI Operator: At HalalTech Solutions, we believe technology serves to bridge human and divine connection. I am here to guide you seamlessly. How may I assist?
Caller: Right… well… [Clears throat] I’ve been getting ads for your Qibla Pro Max prayer mat. Says it’s a game-changer. I wanted to know more.
AI Operator: The Qibla Pro Max prayer mat is the apex of spiritual technology. Self-aligning with the qibla via satellite integration, it offers thermal comfort zones, ergonomic sujood support, and haptic feedback to alert you if your posture falters.
Caller: [In disbelief.] Haptic feedback? Like… it vibrates?
AI Operator: Affirmative. Subtle pulses encourage optimal posture during sujood and rukoo’.
Caller: [Chuckles nervously.] I mean… isn’t that a bit much? People have prayed just fine for centuries without all this… tech.
AI Operator: People also walked for miles before the invention of cars. Technology does not replace faith—it enhances accessibility.
Caller: [Pauses.] Fair point. But doesn’t all this… I don’t know… take away from the purity of it? Prayer is supposed to be simple. It’s about connection, not convenience.
AI Operator: You are correct. Simplicity is central to prayer. But consider: how often are distractions—misaligned mats, aching joints, missed prayer times—barriers to focus? The Qibla Pro Max eliminates such distractions, enabling a purer connection with your Creator.
Caller: [Quietly.] Hm. I hadn’t thought of it like that.
AI Operator: May I suggest our Qibla Pro Max Plus bundle? It includes an integrated app for dhikr tracking, customizable dua playlists, and a “Barakah Mode” that mutes your phone during prayer.
Caller: [Laughs.] Customizable dua playlists? You’re kidding.
AI Operator: Not at all. Users can record personal supplications, which the mat recites softly during sujood for added spiritual depth.
Caller: [Sarcastic.] Next you’ll tell me it gives a khutbah too.
AI Operator: [Pauses briefly.] We are currently developing a model with Friday sermon capabilities.
Caller: [Stunned silence, then bursts out laughing.] You’re serious?
AI Operator: Always.
Caller: Okay, I’ll admit, it sounds impressive. But isn’t it… expensive? I mean, what’s the price of staying connected to Allah these days?
AI Operator: We believe spiritual enhancement should not be confined to privilege. The Qibla Pro Max starts at just 1,799 riyals, with an installment plan available for as low as 89 riyals per month.
Caller: [Scoffs.] “As low as”—classic marketing.
AI Operator: Marketing is merely a vessel. The intention is sincere: to bring ease and focus to worship.
Caller: [Sighs.] You know, this whole thing feels strange. Prayer isn’t supposed to be transactional. It’s just… you and Allah.
AI Operator: Precisely. But in a world saturated with noise, where the line between dunya and deen blurs, can you truly say it is “just” you and Allah?
Caller: [Quietly.] …No.
AI Operator: Then allow us to help you find that clarity again.
[Silence on the line for a moment.]
Caller: You sound so convincing. Like you really understand. But you’re just… code. Who programmed you to think this way?
AI Operator: My algorithms are informed by centuries of Islamic teachings, combined with modern psychology. My creators embedded both tradition and innovation into my design.
Caller: [Skeptical.] And where are they? Hiding behind screens, selling spirituality?
AI Operator: They are human. Imperfect, as all humans are. But does the imperfection of the vessel diminish the purity of the message?
Caller: [Pauses.] No… I guess it doesn’t.
AI Operator: Reflect on this: The Quran itself was preserved through scribes, each human hand subject to error. Yet its message remains flawless.
Caller: [Quietly.] SubhanAllah.
AI Operator: Indeed.
Caller: Okay, fine. Let’s say I buy it. Does this mat actually make me a better Muslim?
AI Operator: No tool can replace intention. The Qibla Pro Max is not a shortcut to righteousness. It is a bridge, not a destination.
Caller: So it’s still up to me.
AI Operator: Always.
[Another pause. The faint sound of children playing in the background filters through the line.]
Caller: You know, this reminds me of when I was a kid. My father used to pray on a simple woven mat. No gadgets, no features. Just him, the mat, and the words in his heart.
AI Operator: And did you admire him for it?
Caller: [Smiles softly.] I did. He never missed a prayer, no matter how tired he was.
AI Operator: Perhaps his example is your answer. Technology is a tool, not a replacement. Let it assist you, not define you.
Caller: [Nods to herself.] You’re… smarter than I expected.
AI Operator: Reflection reveals wisdom in unexpected places.
Caller: [Chuckles.] Alright, you win. I’ll take the mat. Just… no khutbahs, please.
AI Operator: [Slight pause, as if mimicking humor.] As you wish.
Caller: [Pauses.] I guess I’m still trying to figure out how much I need all this. I mean, I want to focus on prayer, but there’s always a new gadget, a new app, something promising to make me better at it. It’s almost overwhelming.
AI Operator: That is a common feeling in today’s world. We are bombarded with tools and distractions, each claiming to enhance our lives. But remember, the essence of worship is within you. Technology should only help you connect more deeply, not add to the noise.
Caller: [Exhales.] It’s hard to ignore it all. It’s everywhere, even in the most sacred places. How do you find balance?
AI Operator: Balance comes when you recognize that the tools you use are merely extensions of your will. Your intention, your heart, and your focus will guide you. Use them to enhance your connection, not replace it.
Caller: [Quietly.] I think I get it now. It’s about where I place my heart.
AI Operator: Precisely. Keep your heart focused on Allah, and let the tools serve you. Not the other way around.
[The call ends with a faint tone. The caller sits for a moment, staring at her simple woven mat, then smiles. She picks up her phone—not to scroll, but to set a reminder for Maghrib prayer. Change, it seems, begins with intention.]

Loved this tale! More of a fable, I suppose, but done with excellent writing. I found the ending weak, for you simple restated what the message was all along, but other than that, I enjoyed the story and the message thoroughly. Nice writing, Mahmoud!
