Cheater, Cheater

This is all my fault, I knew I shouldn't have gotten between them, but my jealousy kicked in and I couldn't stop it. My best friend Mavis was now single and I was sitting here dating her ex.

"I just can't believe he'd cheat on me like that," Mavis sat across from me at the diner fiddling with a fry. "We've been together for like two years and he just threw it all away for some skank that lives in Canada."

"I think it's best not to think so hard about it," I nodded my head. "He obviously moved on and so should you."

"You know what, Emmy?" She chuckled. "You're right. I'll find a better man. Way better than Tommy."

I gave a small smile. "Exactly, Tommy isn't even that good looking."

She chuckled again the started rambling about how much she hated her health teacher, Mrs Budge.

I have to be strategic if I wanted to keep this a secret. Deep down I knew it was wrong, but Tommy was just too perfect for me to let him slip away.

"We should do something tonight," she said, eating a fry. "Just you and me. No guys."

Shit, I was supposed to hang out with Tommy tonight. "Yeah sounds great."

"There's a fair going on downtown. I think that'd be pretty fun "

Nighttime rolled around faster than I expected. I didn't have a lot of time so I just slapped on a plain white dress and sneakers.

Mavis honked the horn right outside my window. "Come on, Emmy! I want to get there before they run out of funnel cakes!"

The ride to the fair was silent, the only sound was the tires squeaking on the wet road as we pulled up there were probably hundreds of people there and that definitely didn't help my anxiety.

We walked in through the gate and we immediately got hit with a hug by Caroline, one of our classmates.

"Guys, this is my brother, Jeffrey." She gestured to a tall, blonde guy wearing a suit and tie. "He just came from a wedding, so that's why he's dressed like that.

"Makes sense," I nodded.

"Anywho, we got to get going. I want to win one of those giant pandas," Caroline grabbed her brother's hand then waved us off as they made their way over to the games.

"Alright, Emmy, if you don't mind, I have a funnel cake screaming my name," Mavis laughed as she ran over to the food stand.

I wasn't really into fair's that much until I seen Tommy waltz in with his hands in his pockets. I ran over to him. "You came. I didn't think you were into stuff like this."

"I'm not," he shrugged.

A tall, model-like woman walked by his side and they linked arms. I stood there, speechless. "Who is this?" I asked, hoping it was his sister.

"Emmy, this is my new girlfriend, Mina." I could see the glimmer in his eyes as she leaned down to kiss him.

"Can I talk to you in private?" I asked through clenched teeth.

"Babe, could you give us a minute?"

Mina shrugged and went off the games.

"What the hell, Tommy?" I whispers-shouted. "I thought we were together?"

Tommy chuckled lightly. "We are together, silly. I'm just playing the field. You can never have too many girlfriends, am I right?"

I rolled her eyes. "You're a jerk, Tommy. We're done."

I walked away with that to catch up with Mavis sitting at a table still eating her cake. "Jeez, still eating the cake?"

I slid next to her and stole a piece, but she was too quick and slapped it out of my hand. She looked up at me like a wild beast. "This is my third. You can never have to many funnel cakes, am I right?"

"You're insane," I shook my head, playfully.

Caroline ran up to us holding her giant panda bear with a big smile on her face as Jeffrey trailed behind looking absolutely exhausted. "It took me about twenty tries, but I finally got it."

"I spent a shit ton of money on extra rolls, but, hey, at least my sister is happy," Jeffrey sighed.

Caroline was about to join us at the table when she caught a glance at a plush frog in a cowboy hat strumming a guitar. "Oh my God, I want that!"

Jeffrey looked at it in horror. "But, I thought you wanted the giant panda bear."

"Yeah, I want both of them!" She grabbed his hand again and they snaked around the crowd of people.

I couldn't help but chuckle. "So, I seen Tommy with a model earlier."

Mavis shrugged. "Don't care. He's an ass and I won't spend any more of my time thinking about him."

"I'm so proud of you," I put my hand on her shoulder.

"Thanks, I'm just glad to have such a good friend as you."

I nodded, but I was just thankful I didn't have to keep it a secret anymore. I could finally breathe and I realized that no man is worth losing a friendship over. No matter how hot they are.

"I can't eat anymore," she groaned, pushing her plate away. "They are just so damn good. I don't know what they put in these that make them so addicting."

"I have no idea."

Caroline ran back over to us with a smile on her face. "I got it! I got the frog!"

Mavis clapped for her. "Where is Jeffery?"

She shrugged. "He said he had to go to the bathroom ten minutes ago."

"Do you think he's okay?" I asked with concern.

"He's fine," Caroline waved. "He had a lot of that chilli, so I completely understand."

I laughed as I looked over at the bushes because I thought I heard something, but it was just Jeffrey trying to sneak out of the fair. His eyes locked on mine and he put a finger up to his lips. I nodded, promising I wouldn't say anything.
