American Teens & Young Adult Fiction

My whole family has gone to Yale University. I’m being forced against my will to apply to every Ivy League school on planet Earth. I want to go to Princeton, but I will most likely end up at Yale. Before we get into that story I’m Emma Davis and I’m 17, I’ll be a senior in high school after the summer. I have a non-strict family other than where my sister and I go to school. Summer vacation started at 12:30 pm yesterday, which means I have 2 months and 5 days of free time 24/7, and that also means 2 months and 5 days to convince my parents to allow me to go somewhere other than Yale.

“Hey, my soon-to-be senior and fellow Yale graduate!” My mom said.

“Actually, about that. I don’t want to go to Yale. I want to go to Princeton,” I said quietly.

“No! You know how me and your dad feel about Princeton graduates,” Mom said.

“Well, my letter of response from Yale hasn’t even arrived, but I got into Harvard,” I said hoping that would make her happier.

“Well, that's better than Princeton,” she said with a bit of a smirk.

“Yay!” I said sarcastically.

“Well, you’re going to be a Yale graduate! I’m so excited!” She said.

“Me too,” I said, faking my happiness. Meanwhile, deep down inside, I knew Yale was where I was going to go because my parents were paying for the tuition, so I was sort of stuck. I also know I will not be going to Princeton; I am too dumb for that, and Princeton sends their rejection letters before their acceptance letters so any day now that letter will be in the mail.

“Hey, Honey!” my dad called.

“Yeah?” I asked.

“Princeton’s letter is here,” he said to me unenthusiastically.

“Ok, thanks,” I replied. As I started to unwrap the letter I already knew the outcome, it was going to say “Emma Davis, I’m so sorry, but you are not accepted into Princeton.” Why was I even opening this letter but too late? That's when I saw it! An acceptance letter to Princeton! OH MY GOD! I can go to Princeton! I started jumping up and down, to the point when my sister came out and asked what was happening.

“Emma, what’s going on?” She asked.

“Ellie, it’s nothing,” I said trying to be nonchalant.

“Let me see that,” Ellie said as she snatched the letter from my hands “OMG, you got into Princeton.”

“Yeah,” I replied acting like I didn’t care.

“ Well, I didn’t see that one coming!” She shouted.

“Neither did I,” I said with a slight smile.

“You’re happy about this!” She yelled.

“No! Absolutely not! Who do you think I am? A monster!” I said as I sounded a little defensive.

“Nope! I’m going inside,” She said “Here is your acceptance letter, I think you should take the opportunity. Honestly.”

“I’ll consider it,” I replied with a smile that went ear to ear. She turned around and walked away, god she was good at manipulating. She has known for the longest time I have wanted to go to Princeton. Why now did she have to also think I should go to Princeton instead of Yale? I see Ms. Betty walking over to me to say something that elderly people say.

“Oh, sugar,” She said in her British accent “Do you have a boyfriend, you are so gorgeous you should.”

“No, Ms. Betty I do not,” I replied.

“Well, I have a grandson, he would just love you,” She said with that old lady smile.

“I’ll have to meet him sometime Ms.Betty,” I replied trying to be sarcastic.

“Next Saturday at 2:00 pm for lunch. How’s that sound?” She asked with a grin.

“Sure. I’ll see you later Ms. Betty,” I replied wishing I hadn’t made a joke about the whole meeting him deal.

“Bye, sugar,” She said with I wave. I decided to go back inside and change into workout clothes to take a jog around the town. It’s about 3 miles to go all the way around, so I suited up for the challenge. I haven’t run in 3 months, so this will be a surprise, only if this goes well. After I pulled my hair back into a high ponytail, I took a moment to stretch and look around at my surroundings. The sun was beginning to set, casting a warm golden glow across the town. I couldn't help but appreciate the picturesque scene before me. People were out and about, enjoying the evening, and I felt a sense of peace and contentment wash over me. As I made my way back home, I thought about the letter from Princeton. It was a dream come true, but it also brought with it a whirlwind of emotions and decisions to make. I had always envisioned myself at Yale, following in the footsteps of my family, but now I had a chance to pursue my path, to go after what I truly desired. Entering the house, I found myself lost in thought, contemplating the possibilities ahead. My parents were seated in the living room, engrossed in a conversation. I hesitated for a moment before approaching them.

"Mom, Dad, can we talk?" I asked, trying to keep my voice steady.

They turned their attention to me, a curious look on their faces.

"Of course, Emma. What's on your mind?" my dad replied, gesturing for me to take a seat.

"I received an acceptance letter from Princeton," I began, feeling a mixture of nerves and excitement. My mom's eyes widened in surprise, and my dad leaned forward, his expression reflecting a mix of concern and interest.

"I know we've always talked about Yale, and I appreciate everything you've done for me. But Princeton has been a dream of mine for as long as I can remember," I continued, gathering my thoughts. There was a brief silence as my parents exchanged glances, processing my words. I could sense the weight of their expectations and hopes for me, and I felt a pang of guilt for wanting to deviate from the path they had envisioned.

"Emma, we want what's best for you, you know that," my mom spoke gently, her tone softening the air.

"We've always wanted you to have the best education and opportunities," my dad added, his voice reflecting a sense of reassurance.

"We understand that you have your aspirations, and we'll support you in whatever you decide," my mom said, reaching out to place a hand on mine.

A wave of relief swept over me, and I felt a surge of gratitude for their understanding. We talked for hours, discussing the implications and logistics of attending Princeton, and by the end of the night, I felt a newfound sense of empowerment and determination. I knew that this was the right path for me, and I was eager to embrace the journey ahead. In the following weeks, I poured my heart and soul into preparing for my future at Princeton. I immersed myself in researching the campus, the programs, and the vibrant community. I spent countless hours envisioning the life I could build for myself, pursuing my passions and aspirations. As the days passed, my excitement and anticipation continued to grow, propelling me forward. When the time came to officially accept the offer from Princeton, I felt a surge of emotion, unlike anything I had experienced before.

It was a moment of affirmation, a realization that I was taking control of my destiny and embracing the path that resonated with my heart and soul. As the summer drew to a close, I found myself standing at the threshold of a new chapter, brimming with newfound hope and courage. I bid farewell to the familiar surroundings and embraced the unknown with an open heart and a resolute spirit. Arriving at Princeton, I felt a sense of awe and wonder wash over me. The campus exuded an atmosphere of intellectual pursuit and boundless opportunities. I threw myself into the whirlwind of orientation week, eagerly connecting with fellow students and immersing myself in the vibrant campus life. Months flew by in a blur of lectures, discussions, and personal growth. I delved into my studies with fervor, relishing the intellectual challenges and the camaraderie of my peers. As I navigated the intricacies of campus life and forged deep connections, I found myself transforming in ways I had never imagined. It wasn't long before I embraced a myriad of activities, from joining student organizations to engaging in community initiatives. I sought out mentors who inspired and guided me, and I immersed myself in experiences that broadened my perspectives and honed my abilities. As the semesters unfolded, I found myself savoring the diversity of knowledge and experiences that Princeton offered. I reveled in the intellectual discourse, the collaborative projects, and the bonds forged through shared passions. I navigated the highs and lows, cherishing the moments of insight and growth, and confronting the challenges with resilience and determination. Amidst the whirlwind of academic pursuits, I found solace in the beauty of the campus, from the tranquil gardens to the grand halls steeped in history. I sought refuge in the cherished moments of quiet reflection, finding inspiration in the timeless allure of the university. As graduation approached, I stood on the cusp of a pivotal milestone, reflecting on the incredible journey that had brought me to this defining moment. I felt a profound sense of gratitude for the invaluable experiences and the unwavering support that had shaped my path and fueled my ambitions. On the day of commencement, I walked across the stage with a heart brimming with pride and accomplishment. As I received my degree, I felt a surge of emotion, honoring the dedication, resilience, and unwavering passion that had carried me through the vibrant tapestry of Princeton. Looking back, I realized that the path I had chosen had led me to a profound sense of fulfillment and purpose. I had discovered my voice, my aspirations, and my capacity to carve out a meaningful impact on the world.

As I stepped out into the world beyond the gates of Princeton, I carried with me the enduring lessons, the cherished memories, and the unyielding spirit that had defined my transformative journey. I embarked on a new chapter, fueled by the unwavering belief that I could make a difference, that I could inspire change, and I could continue to pursue my dreams with courage and conviction. And so, with the indelible imprint of Princeton etched in my heart, I set forth on a path illuminated by boundless possibilities, eager to embrace the endless horizons that awaited me.

Great story. I could feel the position of the character and ending with the support she received. Great story that made me feel like I was there.
