Fiction

I was just some high school junior who did karate and liked solving mysteries, I'd never expect it to have my life turned around and end up here. I'm Queenie Ambers.

"This was in the mail for you" my father said as I pulled into the driveway. I took the envelope from him. The envelope was white with 'confidential' written in red, it was sealed with red wax with the letters O.S.A engraved in.

"What...what is this?"

He pointed to the confidential.

"Right..."

I had a million questions, first of all, what the hell is the O.S.A? There were too many "second of alls" to count.

I sat at my desk, contemplating whether I should open the envelope or not. Long story, short, I let my curiosity get the better of me and now I go by Agent Ambers.

I opened the envelope, a mix of fear and apprehension building up inside of me.

Dear Ms. Ambers, I hope this letter finds you well. On behalf of the O.S.A, we are delighted to inform you that you have been invited to the O.S.A board meeting on 524 Main Street on December 17th, 2011. We suggest that you dress warmly, as there's a possibility of a hail. Kindest regards, Armando Derby, founder of the O.S.A.

On December the 17th at 6:00 after school, I drove to 524 Main Street where Armando Derby marked the address as. My hands gripped the wheel tightly, questioning my life's decisions, questioning every fibre of my being.

"You must be Queenie Ambers," A slim man in a black suit holding a relatively small pistol said.

I straightened up.

"I- yes, I am. Are you Armando Derby?"

"My name is Wayata Osmasi, Master Derby is inside the hall," he said, leading me to a pair of large double doors. "Sit."

He gestured to a chair at the end of the meeting table. At the other end of the table sat an old man which I assumed was Master Derby. Derby was talking to a younger man, maybe in his late thirties, I couldn't hear what they were saying but I guessed it must've been important.

The board meeting started. "Greetings everyone, as you probably all know, my name is Armando Derby, or Master Derby as you should call me." Derby said, standing up. "As some of you may also know, this is the day that I'll be resigning from my position as the head of the Official Spy Association. So that's what O.S.A stands for.

"I would like to welcome your new head of the O.S.A, Master Poshire." Derby stepped aside and the same man he was talking to earlier came in. Everyone stood up and bowed as Derby left and they bowed once again when Poshire came in, so naturally I did the same.

"My name is Edwin Poshire." he said in a cool voice. "I've found the potential for hundreds of young spies. Our regular training programme may become too intense for them, so I propose the O.S.S. Official Spy School. Everyone will start at level one, then progress further until they get to level five and become an official agent of the Official Spy Association."

He smiled.

"Then let me introduce the newest agents in training." he gestured towards me, a boy with black hair which unknown to me now would become my best friend, a boy with honey coloured eyes, a boy with blue eyes, and a girl with rose blonde hair.

Fast forward a year, I passed my final exam for disguise.

"Queenie!"

Isaac, the boy with black hair approached me, gesturing to the folded test paper in my hand.

"Well? What did you get?!"

Our school operated on a weird points system, everything was out of 150 and to get a passing grade you needed at least a hundred points.

"Full marks, bet you failed didn't you?" I teased him, smirking.

"101."

I scoffed.

"There is no way you're going to pass your masters exams."

"Hey, who knows?"

I rolled my eyes. We were both in level 4 now, about to be level 5, this meant we were eligible to go on full missions accompanied by an official spy. It was the two of us plus Perki Derby, the son of the deceased founder, Armando Derby.

Master Poshire called us into the meeting room the next day. "You are to leave in an hour with David Condor. We will provide the jet. Remember the mission, you are to eliminate Ombré's armies and bring back the heart of the operation. Dismissed."

All I can say, the mission did not go well. In the process we lost David Condor and almost lost Isaac.

"Isaac? Are you...bette?" He was lying down, his entire body wrapped in bandages.

"I'm not dead am I?" he said sarcastically. He had always had a humorous side to him, I just didn't think he would try to be funny now.

"I guess not...you could have died though." I muttered, my words fading off as I finished the sentence.

"Hey," he said, his voice softer now, "What matters is that I didn't die. And I know you blame yourself, please don't, it's really not your fault"

"Isaac, you took a bullet for me! I'm supposed to just ignore that?! You almost died!"

"I saved your life, Queenie!"

"But at what risk?!"

"You have a purpose to live! I don't! You have a family...a potential...and-". I cut him off.

"Yeah. And that doesn't matter. It won't matter when I find out that I'm responsible for my best friend's death. Learn some common sense, Isaac!"

Apparently, my first mission was also my most traumatic one.

Now, fast forward to three years ago. I sent Demetra and Demelza Windsor, the prodigy twins, on a mission to Italy to uncover a code. It went well and...they were the ones who suggested me for this role. They looked up to me as trainees and now I can safely say, they're the sharpest agents I've met since Edwin Poshire stepped down.

That's my life as Agent Ambers. Well, at least that's what I told them to be promoted to Lieutenant Ambers.
