Fiction Suspense

A dark alleyway was not the place for a young girl to be at night. Lucy of all people should have known that. So, inevitably, where did she find herself but in an alleyway in the middle of the night with no one else around. She just needed to get back to her hotel, and this happened to be the fastest route. The only sound she could hear was the pitter-patter of her feet as she walked. It was a spooky place, and Lucy couldn’t deny that something felt off. She just wanted to get back to the hotel. Her ears perked up as she heard another sound echo around her. She looked over her shoulder but didn’t see anyone. She could’ve sworn she heard footsteps. Anxious, she increased her pace. The sound didn’t disappear. She was panicking now. Suddenly, she felt something on her shoulder. Before she could scream, a cloth was placed over her mouth. Everything turned blurry, and then it turned black.

Lucy woke up in a dark room. It took a minute for her eyes to adjust, but she was only more alarmed once they did so. She was tied by her arms and legs to a chair. There were no windows or anything really in the room she was in, except for a few things in the corner that she couldn’t quite see and wasn’t sure if she wanted to. There was a door on one wall, but it was closed. She tried to get out of the ropes tying her to the chair, but it was no use; they were tied too tight. She didn’t know what to do and started to freak out. Where was she? Why had she been kidnapped? She had no answers.

Suddenly, the door opened. Two men, both of whom appeared to be in their mid-twenties, entered the room. One of them was tall and had dark eyes and hair. The other was a fair amount shorter. He had light brown hair and blue eyes that were as cold as ice. Both had emotionless expressions etched onto their faces. Lucy was terrified. The men walked over to her. The taller one grabbed her face roughly to make her look him in the eyes. Lucy wanted to ask questions, but she decided it probably wouldn’t be the best idea considering the position she was in. “Hello, Lillian,” the man sneered.

“My-my name’s not Lillian,” Lucy stuttered out.

The man’s face contorted into one of confusion. “Hush, girl. I know who you are. Lying to me will do you no good. You are Lillian Amoreth, daughter of William Amoreth, leader of the most powerful mafia in all of England. Don’t pretend with me. I am Angelo Terreni, and this is Byron Cassini, my second in command. Surely your father has told you about us, has he not?”

“I’m not Lillian, sir. I think you have the wrong person. I’m Lucy Senter. I know nothing about this Amoreth man, nor about the mafia. Please, let me go.”

The man – Angelo – slapped Lucy across the face. Her cheek stung. “Don’t lie to me. I will call your father. He will pay me a good ransom, or you will die.”

If Lucy was scared before, she was terrified now. How on earth had she gotten herself kidnapped by a mafia? Clearly they thought she was someone she was not. Angelo walked out of the room with Byron, leaving Lucy alone again. This was not good. She hoped with all of her heart that after Angelo made the phone call he said he was going to she would be released, as he would realize that she was not this Lillian girl. She waited in silence for what felt like forever, anxiously awaiting the man’s return.

After who knows how long, Angelo walked back into the room. He seemed a lot less intimidating now, and maybe even a little sheepish. “So…you’re not Lillian?”

Lucy couldn’t quite tell if he meant it as a statement or a question, but she nodded her head regardless. “I am so sorry,” Angelo said. “There was some sort of miscommunication and I thought you were someone who you definitely aren’t. You two just look a lot alike, and I just went ahead and kidnapped you. I forgot that we were supposed to kidnap her tomorrow, not today.”

Lucy glared at him and raised an eyebrow. “So why are you kidnapping people in the first place?” she asked.

There was a slightly awkward silence as Angelo and Byron looked at each other. “We’re a mafia,” Byron finally told her.

“I got kidnapped…by a mafia?”

“Yeah, so you see, we can’t really let you go now.”

“Why not?”

Angelo groaned and walked over to her. “How stupid are you?!” he exclaimed. “You know we are a mafia and were kidnapped by us! You could call the police on us or tell another mafia about us! If we let you go, we’re dead meat.”

Lucy sat in thought for a moment, not like there was much else she could do. There she was, sitting tied to a chair and yelled at by a member of the mafia. There wasn’t really much she could do. Her life had been completely uneventful up until this moment. Maybe she could spice it up a little bit. “I want to join.”

“What?”

“I want to join your mafia. You can’t let me go, so might as well let me join.”

Angelo and Byron looked at each other. Byron shrugged. “We don’t have any women in our group. She could be useful,” he said.

Angelo didn’t reply, but he moved towards Lucy and began to untie her. In a moment he was done. “I’m trusting that you are being serious. Your training begins tomorrow at eight o’clock sharp. Don’t be late. Byron will show you to your room,” he told her before walking out of the room.

Byron started to walk out too. “What are you waiting for?” he called to Lucy over his shoulder.

She quickly scrambled to catch up with him. He led her through the large mansion. Lucy had never been anywhere so large or so fancy. It felt like it was straight out of a movie. She looked around in awe. Byron turned into a different hallway and stopped in front of the first door. “You will stay here,” he said. “We don’t really have anything for you since obviously we had been planning on either killing Lillian or putting her up for ransom, but we can get you some stuff tomorrow. In the meantime, I’ll get one of the maids to drop off some clothes. My room is two doors down, and Angelo’s is right across from it. Davis is in between us. You’ll meet him tomorrow. I’ll leave you be. Come and get me if you need anything.”

Byron opened the door for Lucy and walked away. Lucy took in the room. It was huge. Between the actual bedroom, the bathroom, and the walk-in closet, it was probably bigger than her old apartment. She flopped down on the huge bed and was ecstatic to discover that it was as soft as it had appeared at first glance. She laid on the bed for a few minutes before she heard a knock at the door. She went over to open it and was met with a maid holding some clothes. “Here you go, miss. Byron told me to bring these to you. I hope you find them acceptable. My name’s Anna, by the way. I hope we can become friends if you stick around,” she said.

Lucy smiled and took the clothes. “These will be wonderful, thank you. And I would love to be friends. I’m Lucy.”

“Nice to meet you. I’ll see you in the morning.”

“Bye.”

Lucy turned around and shut the door behind her. She quickly got a shower and changed into the pajamas Anna had given her. Sighing contently, she snuggled into her new bed. Who knew what tomorrow would bring?

Lucy was very confused for a moment when she woke up until she remembered the events of the previous day. She got up and changed into one of the outfits that Anna had given her. Afterwards, she walked out of the room, only to realize that she had no idea where she was supposed to be going. Luckily for her, Byron walked out of his room a moment later. He noticed her and gave her a small smile. “Hey,” he said. “You know where you’re supposed to be?”

She shook her head. “No. Angelo told me to meet him at eight but didn’t tell me where to go.”

Byron laughed. “He does that sometimes. C’mon, I’ll show you where you’ll be training.”

Lucy walked over to him, and together the two made their way through the halls. Byron pointed a few important rooms out to her as they passed by them. Eventually, they came to a door at the very end of the hallway on the first floor. Byron opened it, and they went inside. It was everything she had ever really imagined for a mafia training room. There were mats that were probably to practice hand-to-hand combat without getting hurt on one side and a bunch of targets with guns and knives of all shapes and sizes on the other. Angelo had on headphones and was shooting at one of the targets. He hit the bullseye with each shot. Lucy was impressed but not surprised.

Angelo turned around and spotted the two. “You’re almost late,” he said coldly.

“I’m sorry, sir.”

He shook his head. “Get over here.”

Lucy obeyed, and Byron walked out of the room, since he wasn’t needed. “Have you ever shot a gun before?” Angelo asked.

“Once,” Lucy replied. “It was a few years ago, though.”

Angelo sighed but handed her a gun anyways. He walked her through all of the steps that she would need to know for safety reasons and just how to shoot the gun. “Here, just aim a little lower than your target, since the bullet will go a little higher due to the recoil.”

Lucy nodded and held the gun up. She lined it up and fired. It hit just above the bullseye. In just three shots, she managed to actually hit the bullseye. Angelo looked impressed. “Maybe it won’t be so bad to have you on our team after all,” he said thoughtfully.

It had been a month since Lucy had first been kidnapped by the mafia, and in that time she had been training non-stop for her fist mission, which would be tonight. The entire team – Angelo, Byron, Davis, Evan (whom everyone called Elixir because it just sounded better), and herself – were gathered at the meeting table. “Does everyone know what they are supposed to do?” Angelo asked. Everyone nodded. “Good. We’ll take two cars. Lucy, you’re with Bryon and I; Davis and Elixir, you’re together. We’ll meet in an hour. Dismissed.”

Angelo walked out of the room, and the other four followed soon after. Lucy went to her room. She put on black leggings that had secret pockets for several knives and a black cropped shirt. Her hair was pulled back into a high ponytail. Luckily, she would not be interacting with many people for this mission. Her job was to get in, take out the second in command while Byron took care of the head guy, and get out. It shouldn’t be that hard. She grabbed her gun and a vial of poison and made her way to the living room. She spent some time with Davis, who was their main hacker, before they left to head to their mission.

Angelo dropped Lucy and Byron off at the bar where the head guy and his second in command were. “Be safe, Luc,” Byron said, worry evident in his voice.

“You too, Byron.”

They smiled at each other before splitting up. Lucy hated bars. The stench of alcohol was everywhere, and more than one man had come over to her to flirt. She felt highly uncomfortable. Before long, she spotted her target. He was tall and muscular, but that wouldn’t be a problem because he was clearly very drunk. Lucy confidently made her way over to the man. “Hello,” she said flirtatiously.

“Why hello, beautiful,” he replied, his words slurring. “Can I buy you a drink?”

“Sure.” Lucy sat down on the seat next to the man.

“Two beers, please!” he called to the bartender.

The bartender nodded and brought over the drinks. Discreetly, Lucy pulled out the vial of poison. When no one was looking, she poured it into the man’s drink. Just a moment after, he picked up the mug and chugged the whole drink. Lucy took a slight sip of her own (and gagged; it tasted awful), a small smirk etched onto her face. The man suddenly collapsed. The bartender looked at the passed out man and her. “Probably just drunk,” Lucy told him, the lie rolling smoothly off her tongue.

The bartender nodded. Lucy stooped down and felt for the man’s pulse. There was nothing. He wasn’t breathing either. She quickly walked away, not paying for her drink, before she could be suspected of anything. She slid into the car, shotgun next to Angelo; Byron hadn’t returned yet. After a few minutes, Byron appeared and sat down in the backseat. He had a few cuts and scrapes, but otherwise was fine. “Are they dead?” Angelo asked.

Lucy and Byron nodded. “Good.”

Lucy beamed at the praise as they drove off. Maybe getting kidnapped wasn’t all that bad.
