Suspense

The clicking of a keyboard echoes in the quiet of the night. Andy, a lone game developer with the brain of a supercomputer but the social finesse of a squirrel, wrestles with a new glitch within his latest VR escapade, "Quantum Quests." The daily grind of coding and problem-solving can drain the brightest minds of their glow. Andy lives for the strange and bizarre, to battle the unanswered questions of life, while creating his own world where he can feel free.

Like most inquisitive minds, Andy always keeps a keen eye for detail in his everyday life. He likes to study human behaviour to better his projects, mainly consisting of Alternate Virtual Realities. Unfortunately, Andy has discovered a downside to his research and focused attention, as he is beginning to question reality daily. He starts to notice that the world around him does not seem as complex as he once thought.

The coffee he drinks every morning tastes the same, down to the last drop. Birds fly in oddly repetitive patterns, and the news seems to recycle similar events with different names. The world is starting to feel like a repetitive program.

The integration of AI into everyday life has become an exciting, yet fearful step towards a very different lifestyle from the world Andy once grew up in. The hobbies and interests that once filled one's time are now overshadowed by the urge to become armchair experts, regurgitating others' intelligence and facts.  Andy was slowly becoming one of those people; he began utilizing AI for shortcuts in his work. Once he began learning the process of AI operations, he decided to take the opportunity to build an AI for his own needs, to make his latest endeavour, "Quantum Quests," closer to a version of our own reality.

The deeper Andy ventured into AI programming, the further his concerns grew within his own reality. He began finding traces of code "hitchhiking" within his AI signals, picking up random code from thin air when being transferred. He knew it wasn't possible. He tested his AI in every way for days, his mind repeating the same conclusion: his AI program had found the universe's source code.

The coffee, the birds, and the news all seemed to be only the tip of the iceberg. The closer he looked, the more he found, making his daydreams of simulation theory become a greater, terrifying possibility. The more Andy directed his focus towards the world around him, the more he questioned even the little things in life while the bigger questions faded into the background. Some questions that were never of high importance now lived in his mind rent-free, just like that of a song stuck in your head.

With the drive of curiosity mixed with fear, Andy pushed for answers. He pressured some of the greatest minds available to him while incidentally creating some unwanted attention. He began to suspect he was being watched, seeing the same faces, his tech defence was working overtime, making him dive deeper into his suspicions. A slight doubt still lingered in the back of his mind, "Could I be losing it? Have I turned into one of those Wack jobs you read about?" he ponders as he tries to rest his mind while staring at his bedroom ceiling.

The peaceful silence of rest is disturbed by a notification; Andy has a message from an unknown number.

"You're not crazy, you can get yourself out of there."

It takes Andy a few attempts to comprehend what he is reading; his nerves begin to rattle as his hands shake, his sleepy eyes now bright and wide stare at the message. He sends back, "Who is this?" but receives no response. He sends several more, but not a single reply. Suddenly, his mind slows, his heart rate settles as a feeling of comfort rises, "I'm not alone."

A new mystery now fills Andy's mind, a scary but exciting discovery. Who was that? Could there be others out there with further proof? He needs to find out; there could be answers he needs.

One great part about being a programmer is when you need to get a message out to the world, it can be an easy task. Andy directs all his ability to finding this anonymous contact; he just must force them out of hiding, he needs to make them think he found a backdoor.

The programs Andy can build on any average day are capable of many things, more than designed for. With just a day and plenty of caffeine, he now has a virtual agent to draw out his target. He sets the bait and waits patiently.

Andy can understand the human mind and habits enough to mimic a virtual world, so now with the idea that the world runs like a program, he now may be able to get the upper hand. But he knows, just like anyone that's dealt with technology on any scale, sometimes it can have a mind of its own.

The world still turns, and life goes on around him, so Andy blends in with the crowd and moves through the day as normal. He has his usual coffee from his favourite shop, his typical on-the-go breakfast as he gets in a walk around town, all before he would nestle at his desk for the day, staring at a screen of code.

This day, the world is no longer the same; he can't shake the feeling of being an imposter in a world he used to live in. He takes a seat on a bench along his typical route through the park. Nothing looks real anymore; it's as though his surroundings are just all copy and paste, the trees, the animals, down to the people in the far-off distance.

He questions himself, how he has lived this long without seeing it, especially one who mimics the world into Virtual Reality!

"Is that why my work is so easy for me?" he can't help but think. He is starting to feel like now he has just been copying somebody else's work the entire time. Andy's moment of kicking himself down is interrupted by a phone ringing; it's an unknown number.

His stomach turns and tumbles like the leaves past his feet, he stares at the screen; he is torn as the call he wants it to be, he may not be ready to have.

Determined to find answers and maybe an ally, he answers, "h, hello?".

Two seconds of silence pass that feels like minutes, "Uh, Hi?" A soft female voice breaks the quiet. "My name is Dr Lena Hart, I have seen what you're doing, can I meet you?".

Andy's heart races, he hesitates but has to reply, "Definitely, when?"

Lena responds, "Today?"

Dr Lena Hart, a physicist with an appeal that distracted Andy's mind from the world around him, she was like a breath of fresh air. The way she talked and moved, the scent of her favourite perfume, even the crinkle of her brow as she reads, it all made Andy have a sense of regret to leave this world. But she was on a mission herself and knew how to get what she wants.

Lena explains she has been experimenting with quantum anomalies that she couldn't quite understand. Amazed by Andy's research findings, Lena wants to learn more about what he can do. While fearful of what they may uncover, together they discover hidden layers of their own reality.

As they worked, Andy and Lena grew closer, their shared peril forging a bond. Andy's apartment now resembles that of a government supercomputer lab; they now have everything they need to find the truth to it all.

After what felt like months but only mere days searching the source code, they found echoes of ghostly figures trapped in what seemed like digital loops. The messages and warnings kept referencing a name, "The Architect," a figure of power within the simulation.

As they neared what they believed could be a breakthrough, reality itself seemed to fight back. They faced firewalls that required not just logic but an understanding of human emotion and ethics, hinting at an increase in The Architect's evolution.

They reached what seemed to be a core component of the world simulation; all the equipment began to shut down. Andy's apartment began to change; the walls started to resemble circuit boards as flashes of light passed around the apartment. "Did we break through?" they wonder.

They try to exit the apartment only to be confronted by The Architect, a digital reflection of Andy himself. "You can't leave," it taunted, "This is my masterpiece of mayhem!".

Andy can’t hide the look of confusion and disbelief at the being standing before them, while Lena’s eyes are locked onto the replica of the man she has become close to.

In a stroke of chaotic genius, Andy began to rant wildly, creating a digital mind bomb of existential crises, logic loops, and a sprinkle of cosmic irony. With an added riddle of the nature of reality and life, he managed to destabilize The Architect. Andy raced to his computer for a last attempt to crash the simulation and ready their escape. Only The Architect was not an easy foe; just as Andy had become an expert on programming, The Architect had become very learned in human manipulation.

Lena screams as she is wrapped forcefully in the arms of The Architect, "Is it worth losing her?! You could be wrong about it all, Andy!" The Architect yells in what sounds like desperation.

Andy has the button under his fingertip to finally end it all. He looks into her eyes as a tear swells. Andy's hand starts to slowly pull away from the button; Lena cries to Andy, "Don't stop! You have to!"

Andy swallows a ball in his throat the size of a grapefruit; he looks into the eyes of Lena, "I'm sorry," he struggles, as he clenches his eyes and smashes down the button.

Andy is thrown onto his back; he raises his head to see Lena and the world being engulfed in a light blue glow. Andy and Lena lock eyes for the last time.

Lena, in the clutches of The Architect, fades into light as Andy is left staring at himself as The Architect.

"You could have been happy, had it all, you fool!" The Architect roars in anger.

Andy's grief rapidly turns to hate; with tears down his cheek, he snaps back, "Go F*** Yourself!".

With a surge of energy, reality around Andy began to dissolve into streams of data, the screams of pain and frustration from The Architect echo through the crumbling world.

The glow and energy fade to a dark abyss.

Andy can see a sliver of light; he awakes in a lab, gasping for air, a familiar room full of screens and wires. A sigh of relief fills the room.

His memories flood back; the simulation was his brainchild.

Andy is surrounded by his team; they are the creators of a next-gen VR program to be indistinguishable from reality. Andy was at the pinnacle of integrated AI prototypes, with his latest endeavour to test human limits and adaptability in Virtual Reality situations.

As Andy's eyes and mind focus, he can now see Lena, not as a program but as his wife, Dr. Elena Hart. She smiles with tears in her eyes, "Glad to have you back, my love."

Andy settles with a feeling of relief. Was the simulation technically a success, or did he only just escape with his mind intact? He sits in silence pondering the possibilities; the phone breaks his trance with a familiar tone; a message has appeared; it's an unknown number, "Did you really think you could stop me? – Lena"

Welcome to Reedsy. An exciting piece! This narrative almost seems too dense for a short story. It seems like a synopsis for a novel or novella. There is so much to develop, especially the relationship between Andy and Lena. It feels like most of the time you are TELLING us the story rather than developing and SHOWING us how things develop with rich details. I hope you will consider making this at least a novella. I would like to know more details about this world he created and how he created it as well as adventures in this world. The ...
