The solid oak table separates Malcolm and me as our nursemaid, Lucy, babbles on about our 18th birthday plans. We lock eyes, having one of the many silent conversations we've had throughout the years. We are both done with all this planning. Our birthday is tomorrow, and everything has been set for several days. I can tell Malcolm is just as nervous as I am about it. King Harland, our father, has never told us who the throne's heir will be. He would always tell us when we're 18, he'll announce who he has chosen. We both thought it was an ...

Crowley: I lazily lounge on the couch, staring at the ceiling, trying to think of my next evil plan, hoping the hero will stay away long enough to have fun. The last projects I've done have been put down quickly by the hero, Crimson, like he's spying on me constantly. He even attacked me when I was going for coffee! The stupid jerk made me spill the damned drink all over me. I sigh as I roll onto my side, reaching for the remote. My fingers graze against the slick plastic, slowly moving it out of my reach. I groan louder this time when I he...

I look at Domino, my mentor, and our group leader, of the Silver Moon, as he discusses the plan. We're about to pull off our biggest heist to steal the crown straight from under the King's nose. The heist will be to get back at the King for putting a bounty on our heads. "We will enter through the tunnels under the city. They should lead us to the cellars in the basement." Ajax and Austin nod, looking at the rough drawing of the castle layout we've sketched together from drunken nobles bragging about the palace and of guards we could get to ...

I watch my mother put freshly baked bread and pastries, salted meats, and sugary nuts, packing the basket for me to take to Nanas. I try to hurry her, wanting to start my own adventure. Since this would be the first time my parents have let me walk alone to her house. "Come on! Hurry! I want to get there before I'm Nana's age." My mother only laughs, knowing how excited I've been. "I'm trying! Rushing isn't gonna make me go any faster, you know?" I don't listen and start handing her items that go into the basket, trying to make her move fast...

I get out of my beat-up truck, slamming the door closed for it to stay sealed. I looked at the house the GPS had led me to. It seems like another rich kid's party... "Great," I sigh as I walk to the door with the briefcase of all my magician tricks and gear. I wear my wizard robe and pointy hat; the children usually love the costume. The robe is a bit tattered, and the hat is slightly crooked, but it adds to the charm. I knock on the door as I hear the screaming from the backyard. I already know this isn't going to be a great party. The doo...

“Wake up,” I hear the gruff voice of my knight, Arthur, say. I groan, glaring at him. “It’s not even daylight yet. Can’t we wait?” I pull the covers up over me, hoping he’ll leave me alone, but instead, I hear him walking over and then feel the cold air around me as he pulls the covers off onto the floor. “Hey! I demand you to-” “If you want your father to see you as a prince, you need to act like a prince,” he says before I can even demand my covers back. I sigh, knowing he’s right; I sit up and slide off the bed, still not used to waking u...

I get shaken awake by Archer, jolting me into consciousness. Even though I hadn’t made a sound, his urgent shushing sent a chill down my spine. It’s a bad sign if he’s telling me to stay quiet as soon as I’m up. I look around in the darkness. The unfamiliarity of the forest we’ve had to camp in for the past week still feels unsettling. Then I hear a loud CRACK echoing through the silent night. I grab a flashlight and turn it towards the sound, getting up into a crouch. The human shape comes limping through, and thankfully, the creature hasn’...

I wake up as my alarm goes off. Turning it off, I look at the time - 6:00 am. I have to be at work in an hour. I get out of bed, stretch, and look around the dark room but see nothing, only the silence greeting me. I head to the bathroom, passing the full food bowl, and I start to see some mold on the wet food that has been left out for over a week. Getting to the bathroom, I can hear the small water fountain pump struggling to spit out the water I haven't given in quite some time and the smell of the cat box I can't force myself to clean. I...
