“The Tragedy of Elmston” by Wy Bertram

Time had obscured much of Elmston in Aldred’s memory, but on the whole, the town remained strikingly unchanged. The cobblestone was still slippery with black muck, and the lamplights burnt ever dim, flickering suddenly with the undulating wind. The deserted thoroughfare was more unseemly in the aftermath of the harvest celebration. “Wait here.” The soldier gestured into the hall, then as quickly as he’d led Peter there, he turned around and left.  The large metal door closed softly. Peter took in the high ceilings and the grey walls. Too far above to make any impact, a dusty white fan squeaked and swayed precariously. The drabness was appropriate. Even the daylight wasn’t quite bright enough in here.  Readjusting his helmet in the crook of his arm, Peter walked to the nearest bench.
