It was two o’clock in the morning when the library clock stroke midnight. Alice always considered it to be a confusing description, but there was no other way around it. The library, below the flat she was renting, worked as a portal between the two worlds—Svetvselenoi where something unexplainable ruled and the Earth where humans were living—worked. If you looked out the library windows, you would see Barcelona’s golden veins intertwining in what was supposed to be a sleeping city, but megapolises never rest. That was the first rule ...

“We’ve arrived at the station—” Karina pressed her hands on her ears to cut off the rest of the sentence. She knew how it would end. It was her god-knows-which time going this way on this train to an unknown destination. Although there wasn’t much hope left at this point, deep in her heart she wished for the journey to end, but the possibilities that came with the ending were endless and she had a feeling not all were supposed to end well. It also seemed like there were ‘ground rules’ the train had which Karina had no power against. Every ...

Sitting and blankly staring at the wall was all Lana could do or at least that was all, the nurse had told her she could do. Her shoe traced the outlines of the grey square tiles that the hospital floor was covered with. Her hands were shaking. Her whole body was, in fact, as if she was an autumn leaf being carried out and about by fierce gales. Her blue incandescent eyes pierced through the room, judging every single person and object they could land their gaze on. Her shoulders sunk. Everything in the way she looked contradicted each other...

It’s been quite a while now since the demon last appeared in one of Jo’s dreams, but that was probably because Jo hasn’t been having any dreams in the first place – only nightmares, which are quite tiring to have sixteen times in a row. Jo hated waking up in the middle of the night because once she wakes up, she’s not going to fall asleep until the next night comes. Wrapped up in a blanket, Jo wandered who she is going to see tonight: her mother and all the so called “challenges” she makes her daughter go through to prove she deserves to be...

Eve hated bees ever since one of them stung her when she was seven. The bee died soon after the incident which made Eve smile since the bee got what it deserved, but then break down crying because death seemed too severe for a punishment that could’ve been an accident or self-defence. The event didn’t give birth to fear, but rather to strong dislike for the bees. Eve didn’t just have unpleasant feelings towards the insects but also towards the humans which reminded her of bees (only human ones were more dangerous). People’s stings would pier...

Violet didn’t know who thought and convinced people that proposing on Christmas is romantic, but she knew that she definitely hated this person with her whole heart. There wasn’t a worse way to spoil her favourite holiday than by trying to make her a wife. Growing up as a child, she only ever wished for two things: to never get married and to never have a bad 25th December. Ironically, Christmas of 2016 had a couple of surprises in stock for her.“Hey, Nat! Can you please put those boxes over there,” cried Violet from the kitchen “Oh, and do ...
