Blink. Light. Sound. A feel of… sand? Beneath me. Open eyes. Bright light hurts. Cold. I look down. Yep, sand. Also, naked? I look around. Walls in every direction. Round. No roof. No sun, but bright everywhere. One door. Big door. Sound again, a loud banging. From the door. Door begins to open. Worry. Blinking again, I try to stand. My muscles are weak, it takes too long. I sway as I get to my feet. And shiver. The door opens wide. Darkness. Then, a creature! A massive creatu...

this stinking habitat already. Alright enough for now. I clearly need some sleep. 22.4.2101 Yes I did. Ten hours of sleep and a solid day’s repair work later I feel much more optimistic. We will be fine. I will be back on Earth this time next week and maybe next time I am rotated up to the LHabs there won’t be a potential catastrophic failure of life support systems to address. This is what you get when UNASA lets the lowest bidder build a structure on the moon apparently. Yay Capitalism. At least tomorrow is a Field Day. That always bright...

The stars outside Arecibo Station disappeared behind another arriving freighter: the Coral Sea. Kiffen’s here, Carlina thought, gazing out the tiny porthole on the rimward side of the station’s lower tower. She rolled her eyes, already anticipating his boastful swagger after the job he and his crew pulled at the Pices outpost. Turning back to her datapad, she pulled up the statistics again and shook her head. The last time someone had made off with that many quid worth of artifacts to auction off, the whole crew retired to ...

Our ship arrived in the moon’s orbit three days ago. I’m the only one left now. I can see Earth through the portal but I don’t think I will be making it back. Hopefully this recording will be a record for those who follow. No matter what you do - don’t go in the cave. It’s waiting for you. Sorry I must have fallen asleep. It’s so cold here. Looks like I have about 12 more hours of oxygen, but I think I’ll freeze to death before I run out of air. I’m not sure which one I’d prefer. I wonder if I should let...

The Fall of Corbridge The sun blinded him; he hadn’t seen it in days. His feet dragged on the ground as the two guards pulled him along between them, ignoring his weak pleas for water. Ignoring, or not hearing, as his dry throat and cracked lips betrayed him into unintentional silence. A few minutes after hauling him out of the hot box, they stood him in front of her. He blinked and tried to focus on his queen. “Brude. You survived,” she said, staring at him intently. “I can’t say I’m surprised,” she said harshly....

The man opened his eyes. He lay on the floor of a kitchen next to two overturned chairs. Rolling on to his side he used one to help him stand up, blinking, and shook his head in an unsuccessful attempt to clear the fog within. Shutters outside the window above the sink blocked out most of the day’s light but a thin line of it illuminated two doorways on either side of the room. He leaned over and picked up first one chair, then the other, pushing them back under the table against the wall, and made for the door on the right. ...
