It wasn’t enough for him to say he hated him; he had to show it. He had to find some way to get it through his best friend’s thick as-an-oak stump skull that he absolutely hated him. He hated his face, the perfect, near-geometric curve of his cheek that reflected the sun if it hit him just right.
