Atsuo knew something was wrong when he heard the fire alarm blaring as he approached his apartment. The noise got louder when he opened the door and was accompanied by a string of curses from his girlfriend. He followed her voice and found her in the kitchen. He was immediately assaulted by the smell of burnt food. Yukiko was violently shaking a fire extinguisher while aiming it at the stove, where he saw a wok on fire.“Is everything alright, hun?” Atsuo asked, trying to ignore the piercing fire alarm.Yukiko’s head snapped toward him and her...

It was past nine at night and Yukiko Fujihara was barely done re-organizing the books. In fact, she only managed to arrange the self-help section, and it was the smallest area in the library. Yukiko sighed and pulled her thick purple hair out of the ponytail and tied it in a messy bun. Then she stared at the piles of books in front of her and adjusted her glasses. Perhaps she should not have sent her mother away. Yukiko shook her head. ‘Not tonight,’ she thought to herself. Her mother had worked all day and needed space and privacy. Yukiko h...

“I’m done with you,” Samuel’s face was red from screaming. “Either we get couples counselling or we divorce.” “You will divorce me?” Gina threw back as tears streamed down her face. “After almost a decade together, you’re willing to throw it all away?” “Don’t turn this on me,” Samuel stepped closer to Gina, glaring down at her. “You knew I wanted kids. I always made it clear. And now what, you’re telling me you never wanted kids?” “I thought you’d change your mind,” Gina said, softer this time. She broke into sobs and covered her face. “You ...

Ever since she could start walking, Carli's family discovered she was clumsy. She grew up covered in cuts, bruises, and scrapes. Most of them from tripping, some from bumping into tables, some from walking into doors. It was not odd to see a bandaid somewhere on her body. Carli was not allowed anywhere near the sportsfield because the last time she was there, she broke her arm. And she wasn't even playing; she fell down the benches. She has broken her nose twice already, yet she was only seventeen. Every gym class for her was like a disaster...

Dean ate the last potato chip from the plastic packet as he lounged on the couch. He lifted his head and turned the packet upside down, shaking the last of the crumbs in his mouth. Some of the crumbs fell in his unkempt thick beard and he pulled a large piece and put it in his mouth. He knew he was pathetic but he was too tired to care. He unsubscribed from Netflix to save money so he was watching awful quality youtube videos on his large television. Perhaps if he cut his internet and sold the TV he could manage to pay another month’s rent. ...

Esme was caked in flour, powdered sugar, icing, and food colouring. Nonetheless, she smiled at the counter completely covered in a variety of Holiday cookies. Esme slogged all day in the kitchen for no less than 12 hours that day to make over a thousand cookies to sell at the holiday festival. This was an important event their town held every year and for the first time since they opened their bakery, Esme managed to acquire a spot for a few hours to sell their cookies. Esme was exhausted but the adrenaline rush from completing her goal kept...

Sam sat on the church bench stoically as he stared at the priest preaching his sermon at the podium. He wanted to give the impression that he was listening to the priest even though he found it hard to concentrate. On the outside, he looked calm, collected, although sombre. On his insides, his heart pounded in his chest as every inch of his soul was in a panic mode. The incense scent wafting through the church did not do much to calm his nerves as the smell of cheap perfume lingered around him. Whimpers and silent cries surrounded Sam. Occas...
