Hi, I’m Rick Duncan. I just graduated from the eighth grade and I’m spending a couple of weeks with Grandma. Grandpa died two years ago, but Grandma still lives in their farmhouse. She is in her upper fifties and wants to continue her rural lifestyle as long as she is able. Dad helped her sell most of the farmland, leaving Grandma with about two acres. That allows her to maintain a sizeable food garden and her chicken coop. She also has a decent-sized garage for her car and a small tractor to cultivate her garden. I’m old enough now to help ...
“I’m late! Of all days to miss my train,” thought Angie. “I’ll arrive late to our monthly meeting. And Phil said this would be one of the most important meetings of the year.” Angela Stone was the quality control supervisor at Med-Rec Services, a national provider of medical records services. Her next subway train downtown would not arrive for another ten minutes. The downtown station was only a five-minute bus ride to Med-Rec’s building, but the bus and train schedules didn’t always coincide with each other. She would likely be 20 minutes l...

George and Opal Roberts were returning home to Mineola after an evening with their long-time friends, Roger and Molly Tidwell, who lived in Wills Point. “Molly has always been a good cook,” Opal was saying, “and tonight was no exception. That smothered chicken was simply delicious. And the way she prepared those carrots, I don’t know when I’ve had anything so tasty.” George, the quiet one of the two, said, “Yep. She sure is a good cook alright.” “What were you and Roger talking about?” “Oh, about all the fish he and his friends caught a coup...

Susan had always been a quiet and reserved person, preferring to keep to herself rather than engage in the social whirlwind that often surrounded her. She had always felt a little out of place, like she didn't quite fit in with the rest of her peers. But that all changed the day she saw him. It was Saturday afternoon when she stepped into Anderton’s Bookshop to look for her next read, when she caught a glimpse of a familiar face browsing through the inventory. Just as Susan entered the store, he looked up and saw her. The man seemed to be eq...

Margaret heard the rain starting to fall at a very slow pace. “I guess the storm is about to begin,” she said. The weather report predicted a storm that afternoon. She remembered what her mom had called “the storm of all storms” that she experienced when she was only ten years old. “Mom was right,” she thought aloud. “That was a storm that will never be equaled,” she said, now talking to her dog, Benny. Margaret was now 22 years old and married. Her husband, Rick, was out of town on business. So, Benny was her only companion this afternoon. ...

Gloria was fifteen years old when her father got a new job that required the family to relocate to Willow Creek. She was uneasy about moving to a new town, because up until now, she had lived her whole life in a small town where everyone knew each other. She hated having to leave all her friends behind to start over in a new place. But here they were, unpacking boxes in their new home. When Gloria went to get something out of the car, she noticed the woman across the street watching her with an extremely grim expression. Gloria couldn't help...

It’s Friday afternoon and it’s time for Brenda Marsh to head to the grocery store on the way home from work. Brenda is a retired schoolteacher who now works part-time for a local insurance agency on Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons. But, on Fridays she gets off at 4:00, which is perfect for beating the 5:00 crowd at the store. However, on this particular Friday, she had to stop for an oil change on her car before going to the store. She still arrived ahead of the afternoon crowd, but just barely. She could see the additional customers...

Mary Hamlin’s alarm went off. It was going to be another average day at Cushing High School where she was in her senior year. Mary was tired so she pressed the snooze button. Just as she was getting back to sleep, her mother came in and said, “Get up, Mary!” “Oh, Mom, I just need a little more rest before I get up.” “Mary, it’s time to get up and get going. You never know what the day might bring.” “Huh?” she thought to herself. “I never heard Mom say anything like, ‘You never know what the day might bring.’”She raised up enough to question ...
