Zarah input the numbers into the computer like she did every day. She closed the paper files on her desk and put them in the filing cabinet connected to her desk, locking it shut. She put all her scrap paper in the shredder before gathering her things. She was done for the day. One file she'd tucked into her bag. It was a copy of the one she'd been handed this morning and wouldn't be missed. There was data in this file that she needed to memorize. There was nothing on it that would alert security on her way out. She entered the elevator ...

The stars were not dim, but they seemed so. She stared at them through the window, searching for hope. What must one do to find hope after it vanishes? She didn’t know. She stroked her arm, feeling the ridges there that were sign of the times she had truly given up hope. When all that is left is pain, what is left to look forward to. Everyone told her she was so strong, how they admired her. Yet when she began to fall apart those same people scattered. They admired strength when they didn’t have to see what caused her to become so strong. ...

Sarah sat on the couch, tv remote in one hand, popsicle in the other. She was on her eighth episode of Downton Abbey so far today. It was too hot to do more than sit here with the fan blowing on her. Yesterday she’d taken a cold bath (it had hurt to sit in cold water till her body finally cooled) she had no desire to repeat that experience. So once the temperature started to decline, she would take a cool shower instead. Unfortunately, that meant that she would have to survive until after 6PM. Holding a book was too much effort. Sarah hadn’t...

Amanda clutched the bag to her chest. She could have held it in a normal fashion, but the contents were too precious to leave hanging at her side. She hurried down the block, stopping at the corner bus stop. In the moments it took for the bus to arrive she was thankful for two things, one that the bus was running on time, and two that it wasn’t raining. It wasn’t safe for a young woman to be waiting outside after dark, so the bus being on schedule kept that from being a problem. The rain could ruin the comics she had purchased today, o...

June 15thDear DiaryWhy I address this like I’m writing a letter to some unknown person I have no idea. It’s probably from all those shows I watched as a kid. Guess when you hear something often enough it does really affect you. I’m sitting here at the ungodly hour of 2am writing because I have nothing else to do. That’s a lie, there are plenty of things I could do, but this is what my psychologist suggested. I may not like everything she suggests, but I at least give it a shot. How writing nonsense is supposed to help I have no idea. Wow this...

Beth walked along the paths she knew so well. The sun was going to set soon but she couldn’t get enough of the spring air. Fira her dog, a Finnish Spitz, walked at her side. Many dog owners let their dogs run ahead of them, but Beth knew that by keeping Fira beside her, the dog knew who was in charge and wouldn’t try to run off towards something that excited her.Beth had had a long day and was happy to relish the bit of alone time. Her roommates would pester her when she got back, but for now she allowed a bit of peace into her world. Both S...
