“To Wake Beyond the Trees” by T.A. Burt

Nothing could keep me from my bed that night. Not the hunger pains in my stomach, nor the sweat that soaked my clothes, reeking like a bad day. I needed to sleep more than anything else, even if dinner and a shower would, without doubt, make it more restful. I couldn’t say the reasons why I was so hungry or sweat-drenched or sleep-deprived. To tell the truth, I don’t really remember why I was in such a state. There are flashes of memory—glimpses surrounded by a pervasive fog—but nothing substantial, nothing with which to draw any conclusions...

“Sir Wittenhouse Island” by T.A. Burt

Sir Wittenhouse lifts his head to find that he is nearly upon the beach of some strange remote island in the middle of the ocean, having been adrift on an inflatable yellow raft after the sinking of his yacht: "Well I'll be damned…" he says. And this is not a normal, everyday "Well I'll be damned." This is the most astonished, parched, hopeful, sun-burnt, exhausted, exclamatory "Well I'll be damned" the world has ever seen. He jumps from the raft into the shallow surf and drags it beside him up onto the beach. It looks like a relativel...
