CW: mention of suicide It came every night, usually around midnight but sometimes later. The cry of “Happy New Year” from a man approximately three floors and two apartments over from mine. When he started up the call there were a few brave residents who would scream back at him, telling him to shut up and go to bed or reminding him that it was not the new year but just a regular night in September. CW: death, grief, mature language. It sounded like a shoe crushing a bag of chips or a pair of glasses. A crushing, cracking sound. From the cab of her dad’s pickup, two sizes too small for the passenger seat, Andie craned her neck to see the road below them. She pressed her face to the glass, trying to angle her head just right to catch a glimpse of what they had hit.
