Monica's hands were shaking as the bitter cold cut through her thin gloves. She fumbled with the keys as she tried to unlock her car door. Her breath like a cloud in the darkness. "I'm just going to stay up for a while, I have a lot of work to do." I say, as I comb my fingers through my thinning hair, as a cluster of hair falls to the floor. I hang up the phone and silently walk down the hall and turn the corner. Siggy, my dog, is laying on the floor whimpering. "Oh siggy, you've always been by my side. Come, sit with me." I feel heavy, as if I am walking with concrete caked onto my shoes. I look down and see the opaqueness of my being. My hands are fading, and I can't hear myself breathe. I close my eyes and count.... one...two...three. I open my eyes, and I see a dusky sunset off to the right. Socially awkward, I find myself easily escaping into the world of writing. I'm an avid reader, a mother to a 5 year old, wife of 7 years and a full-time nurse. When I find a moment of silence in a fast paced life, I write.
