“To us,” she said. “To us,” he smiled and they clinked their glasses. The sun dipped slowly towards the sea-lined horizon as Isabel and Gavin lost themselves in each others eyes, semi-fuzzed and slightly misted by their half-sipped cocktails. It had been an eventful day. In the space of eight hours they’d arrived, met each other – along with their co-island inhabitants – and orientated themselves around this near-perfect location. Everything was as exceptional as promised. The rooms, the kitchen area, restaurant, bar, social faci...

Jason, 40 years old today, surrounded by friends, sat back and ordered himself a coffee ice cream float. He did so with pride and luxurious anticipation. Gone was that hollow hankering feeling, the absence of a good time if the time didn’t include copious amounts of alcohol. He had been saving up so that he and his family world be able to feel something this summer. Maybe excitement, possibly an hour or two of joy but, if at all possible, a week’s worth of happiness. So far it was looking good – they were dipping into a weekly ration of anticipation and looked set to ramp this up in good time for his summer leave. It wasn’t easy of course. Agency Detectives didn’t earn as many emo...

Do you judge people by the way they look? And does that make you feel reassured or wary? I ask this because the guy who turned up to fix my laptop was a geek. Really. Totally. When he checked in at the front desk I looked up and knew exactly who he was. Pale, glasses, spindle thin, spotty – well, you know. If you lined him up in an identity parade he'd be the first guy you'd pick to fix your laptop. So much so that you’d also be asking yourself, can he actually do it or does he just dress up like someone who can so he gets the gig? Anyway ...
