Uta awoke in his hammock to a morning chorus of wild birds. The waves of the lagoon lapped softly upon the sand. In the distance a wildcat roared. Rain had brought forth the aroma of pine needles and the fruity smell of tou-tou fruit in the trees outside the bachelor’s hut. “Uta!” he felt a tou-tou fruit hit him in the head. “Get up, Magic One! Today is the day!” Sun-kissed men and boys of all ages, with long braids, and striped tattoos, emerged from their hammocks, stretching and wandering off to relieve themselves. Each murmured a greeting...
