In the months following the loss of his father, Richard began to obsess over death. He certainly wouldn't have described his behavior as such; cautious, maybe, with a greater awareness as to the fragility of life, but not obsessive. He bought a motorcycle helmet to wear in his car and started citing statistics about annual automotive fatalities.
