He promised me a childhood. He said that if I got good grades and stayed in school he would buy me a high school ring by my 16th birthday. I stared down at him, his face like wax and feeling like frozen chicken. I was 15 and my Dad was dead. The funeral was a blur. Everyone cried, hugged, and held on for far too long.
