Life was so much easier when I was a kid, before I turned nine.  Back then, there was no Bixby. Oh, I wanted Bixby. I’d begged for him.  “Joey has a dog, can’t we have a pet?” That was me, pretty much every day.  “Not a dog, honey,” said Mom, “You have school and your dad and I work. My 8 year old is my beta reader, and the fact that he finished reading my middle grade manuscript, (about a girl who wants to learn how to sew) and has been stealing pillows, socks, stuffies and duct tape to make dress forms, is about the most encouraging compliment that a mature beginning writer can possibly experience. My 5 year old says my book is boring and would rather that we adopt a dog and name him “Napkin”.
