I woke up to air that was the beginning of a string of 30 degree starts we were supposed to have that week. As I felt that reality, I stuffed my arms under the blankets and just listened to the alarm. Rick gently shook my shoulder. I opened my eyes to see him fully clothed and with his lunch pail in hand. “Hey, I’m headed out,” he said. While the information came slowly, the result hit me like a truck and I sat u...

The Ascension bells had rung three times in my life, once when I was a young boy, again when I was not much older than the first, and finally today. My head bowed as I listened. The masses around me were driven to silence as the bong, bong, bong continued. My fingers coiled around my other hand and I winced, I tried not to, but I was ashamed. The noise frightened me, as it did the small child I heard crying somewhere in the chamber. My queens hand rested on my shoulder. Her soft voice came to me like the distant spot of a light house in a ha...

I arrived at a Victorian style mansion that had certainly seen better days. Multiple winters, storms, and even some vandalizers hadn’t done the place any wonders. The majority of the windows were smashed out. Broken glass riddled the roundabout driveway almost as thick as the fall leaves. As well the lion statues that had once sat parallel on the steps up were pulled over. One was even smashed to bits by what looked like a rock hammer. It was a sad and broken sight to me. Such a beautiful home that was clearly now just an outlet for destruct...

When the man in the white tee shirt walked into the apartment, Whitney immediately thought he seemed on edge. That kind of behavior wasn’t all out of the ordinary when Jax brought a customer back with him. But this guy was different. He seemed nervous, but not afraid. Which she got that vibe from a lot of people, most customers seemed to think that one wrong move would mean Jax would pounce like a tiger. But he walked in and took his shoes off without Jax even having to ask. And looked around the place with a nod. &nb...
Grand Regent Ziena, stood on the viewing deck of a regime ship. It dragged a shadow that blocked out the sun for the forces below in the trenches and gun positions and turned more heads than the enemy. The artillery shelled, and scorched landscape was a depressing sight to Ziena. At this point, this valley should have been in full fall bloom like the small bit of her planet that they still resided on. Whatever I decide, these will be our final days, she thought. Her eyes carried up to the emperor. He was l...

“T-Jack One Actual we have you on radar. Coming up on your right wing.” Colonel Allbarian, sat with hands clasped. His head hanging low and his thigh heavy with the weight of his sidearm. The only weapon he’d brought on this night. However, he wouldn’t be doing any of the fighting. Allbarian was far too old now for that kind of thing. Weak knees, a bad back, and (he hated to admit it) a growing gut were only a few signs that his days of door kicking and gunfighting were behind him. He held some resentment ...

Angelo Scaletta faced the London skyline with his hands clasped firmly behind him. Listening to the whirling and progressive chimes of his newest creation coming to be. He felt a sense of anxiety while at the same time hope. If this doesn’t work, then I’m out of ideas. “Hello?” a voice suddenly asked. Angelo turned to the dual-lensed cameras. The two lenses at first moved independently of one another all around the room. &nb...

The air parade that seems to happen every night at this point continues until it drowns out all other sounds. The letter is on the table next to her. For a moment, Eve wonders if she should read it. She sips the tea clasped in her hands and looks at the flag outside her window. Its black, red, and white colors flutter in the soft winter breeze. She looks to the bedroom door across the hall, her husband is most likely sound asleep by now. January 3rd, 1941 To, Ms. Eve Claude In German-Occupied Paris Let me first start by writi...

I often ask myself if I should be where I am. If the responsibilities that I have accepted should be my own or the peoples whose life I affect. As Mark drove under the leaves of orange and brown autumn change, he slowly begins to remember my failure the night before. He remembers that he was lying in bed. He’d woken up for no detectable reason not even the feeling of pressure one feels when they need to pee in the night. It was pitch black, his alarm clock normally giving a sense of placement in the room but that was out too. Power must...
I took off running at the sound of the screams. I knew it was a small child just by the pitch of it. It came from a fallen building. The scream echoed out of a horizontal window with an edge of broken glass that was dark as night. A gateway to hell beckoning me forward, the screams of the damned within. A royal must know the pain of the loyal, lest they forget what service costs. I kicked the edge of the window and squeezed through, another ...

Molly “Their behind us Molly!” Jamie yelled. I felt his cold cheek on my sternum and turned his head forward. “I know!” I said sternly, sounding like my mother. I flicked the reins one more time just to make sure the stallion was giving it everything he had. I had just glanced up at the north star when I risked a look back. Jamie was right, behind us was a gathering of six lanterns. Called them all did ya? I thought. Sur...

“You know something?” Wesley said. Anders peeked over at his ship; a bit of flame was coming off his nose. “What?” “I’m bored.” There was a silence on the line that Wesley could virtually feel Ander's eye’s staring at him with that squint he had when he thought you said something stupid. “You’re…bored?” “Like a bird with no wings...

I put my Ford in park and looked at the trailer for a moment. The rain was just starting to drizzle on my windshield when I saw the first flash of lighting on my right side. The thunder rolled in as I lit up a cigarette. I’ll be honest if I had known how this night would end, I’d have probably smoked the whole pack. But at the time, I wasn’t even sure if I was gonna get out of the car. It’s difficult to describe how it felt going back to that trailer park so many years later. I guess after some more ...

“Unit 341, signing off.” Station responded, but it wasn’t much more than a scratch on his ear. The green line train wasn’t far off but instead of standing to get ready like the rest of the late-night riders, Parks opened the same email he’d looked at a dozen times already. There was some other basic information like his date of birth, address, and social security number. None of which mattered, what mattered to him was toward the bottom of the email. He slowly scrolled tow...

I remembered the shot, but that was it. I remember being startled by the lack of kick, and the brightness of the green beam that lit up my face and cut through an air car like a plow through snow. I’d looked up from the display with a dropped jaw and wide eyes as I watched the fiery wreck spin out of control and tumble to the ground below. It felt like something washed over me. All my doubts, shakes, and cold chills were burned away by that laser. The ensuing firefight hadn’t even scared me, and I hadn’t lost this smile and light in my eyes ...
