The nurses were changing shifts when I eventually got there, but I made sure to thank each of them personally before I went in to see him. They had been lovely and were genuinely sorry that I hadn’t been with him when he died. They tried to make me feel better by saying how difficult it is finding a parking space at that time of day.  I was more concerned that I wasn’t crying, and how that might look to them.
