I smoothed my mother’s cream-colored tablecloth over the kitchen table, ironing out the creases with my palm. The material felt silky and smooth against my skin, triggering memories I’d once stowed away for safekeeping. The purple flowers she’d hand-stitched around the hem brought a smile to my face.
