Fifteen.Elsie’s eyes fluttered open, peppering the darkness with distant stars. Shards of metal and plastic streamed before her, and her outstretched hands bore the marks they left behind. Long, blonde hair floated before her eyes, threatening to obscure the space station from her vision entirely.Fourteen.The side of the space station gaped open. A fiery tongue twitched out and dissolved as it licked the hollow air, trailing smoke through aimless splinters. As the pieces silently crumbled before her, one word forced its way to the front of E...

This is a sequel to my previous short story Partners Against Crime. Kassian leaned his forehead against the glass wall, watching people pass by on the street below him. He folded his sinewy, tattooed arms and leaned into the window, allowing his nose to smoosh against the glass and his mind to wander. If he hadn’t, he’d have noticed much sooner that Chandra had approached him and was now watching him with an amused expression on her face. “Bored?” she joked. Kassian didn’t move. “How long is Atlas going to be gone?” Chandra leaned against th...

If you fear your imagination, don’t visit the library after dark. They say it is haunted. Children chase each other around the schoolyard with the phrase, and teenagers dare their friends to sneak in after hours, trying to mask the fear in their own eyes at the prospect. However, I knew none of this as I stumbled toward the massive stone building that night. Jobless, homeless, and racked with fever, I had very little to lose. A failed interview had left me far from my makeshift bed when night fell, and the darkness closed in around me as sta...

Katie went on her first date today. I’m not upset. I mean, you have to expect someone to date again after a relationship ends. It’s been a whole year; I’m surprised she even waited that long. That doesn’t mean I liked it, though. I followed them to the restaurant. I wasn’t trying to be creepy or anything; I just wanted to see what he was like. Not that she’d even notice I was there. Oh, what I’d give for her to notice me again. His hair is the same color as mine, but he’s a little taller. Got a nice beard, too. I think I heard her call ...

“We can’t stay like this forever.” Ada blinked, jolted from her reverie. She gazed up into the man’s kind blue eyes as a small smile twitched at the corners of his mouth. The wind ruffled his chocolate-colored hair as he held the door of the tailor’s shop open for Ada to step through. Her cheeks grew warm and her heart skipped a beat. Unaware of how long she’d kept him there, Ada smiled sheepishly as her cheeks grew warm. “I… suppose you’re right. Thank you.” She slipped through the doorway and ducked behind a shelf, watching the man through...

Kassian strolled through the elevator doors. “Nice digs,” he commented as Atlas switched on the lights. “Thanks.” Atlas gestured to the sitting area in the center of the room, and Kassian settled onto the couch. He pretended not to notice the famous superhero’s probing gaze; he knew he stood out. The tattoos, spiked hair, scars… they served as permanent reminders of a life he wasn’t proud of. A beep resounded through the chamber, and a hologram popped out of the arm of Atlas’s chair. “Can I talk to you?” a female voice asked. The superhero n...

Rebecca stared off into space as Jenny hovered intently over her computer. “How much time have I got?” Rebecca glanced at her phone. “It’s 10:15. They’re late.” Jenny let out a deep breath. “Okay, I finished the essay.” “Oh, good!” Rebecca looked over her shoulder. &nb...

Jina stood at the end of the balcony. A breeze swept her long, chocolate-colored hair across her shoulders and tugged at her gown. She clutched the ends of her sleeves and gazed up into the night sky as her eyes brimmed with tears. The stars above blurred together and melted away as she drew in a shaky breath. “Is anyone out there?” she whispered into the night. “Is there anyone who can help me? I don’t know what to do.” &nbs...

Rebecca’s heartbeat drummed in her ears as she flew past the trees and bushes. Her attempt at noiselessness was futile; leaves and sticks crunched beneath her as she darted farther and farther into the woods. The rays of a late-afternoon sun streaked through the branches of trees towering overhead, threatening to expose her. She slid down a small incline and fell on her back at the bottom, tumbling directly into a stream. Standing and shaking water from her hands, she delicately tiptoed her way across and began climbing the opposite incline....
