A car crashed yesterday on the crumbling backroads of this town. Overnight, the great Pine across from Davee’s liquor mart, the one that grows at three times the pace of any other, so far from any lake, river, or aquifer, extended its roots up through the pavement, forming a natural, unmarked speed bump. On his knees and occasionally his hands, the boy wished for rain. Driest summer on record, but then again so was the last, and the one before that, too. The uneven, splintered boards on the floor of the brokedown farmhouse were becoming soft and polished by the dusty window at which he prayed.
