Heliophobia (noun) refers to intense, sometimes irrational fear of the sun. There is this idea that if children have their fantasy ripped from them or destroyed too soon that it would destroy them. So given how much Jasper's parents loved him, they did everything they could to avoid that. So much that they continued to let Jasper live as he pleased.
