When Josh travels from his Mexican retirement home back to the States, he uses a handy website to find persons willing and able to housesit for him. Otherwise, the plants and the family pets would have no way to survive on their own. Lavinia, a citizen of Great Britain and a gal formerly teaching in Thailand, willingly flew from London to the Mexican state of Baja California Sur to fill the position for a three-week period. Upon Josh’s return, she remained in Mexico and rented a condo near the beachfront for the remainder of her stay. The fo...

Out of the kindness of her heart, retired Master Chef Rose Bowl currently teaches a Friday evening cooking class sponsored by our own Carson City Adult School. Rose studied pastry making under the tutelage of the now famous and renowned French Chef Julia Child. I was recently invited to audit the class last weekend and I would like to share my experience here in what follows. In preparation for the drive over to the campus, after a quick review of the evening weather forecast, I decided to make sure my umbrella was close at hand. Of course, ...

He wasn’t yet a grandfather, but nonetheless Scott was the oldest student in all of his classes at San Diego State University. In grade school, he had had no interest in the obligatory hour of Spanish lessons on Friday afternoons, so it was a little out of character for him to have chosen to pursue a major in that same subject area. I guess he enjoyed tackling the challenge of becoming proficient in a foreign language after all. Scott does still remember the warmhearted Mexican lady Mrs. Ortega, known simply as “Tega” by the family. She help...

Betty was the youngest of three children. Her sister Lorraine died as a youngster following a severe illness and her newlywed brother Jerome was killed subsequent to a head injury after having been thrown from a horse. Not only that, but Betty’s mother and father were only children. Without Betty having any aunts, uncles, or siblings, and now with her having been involuntarily sterilized, the Belcher family bloodline would come to a despondent end, or would it? Mother found herself infertile due to a teenage malady that impacted her ovarian ...

Sometimes blind curves on the highway and power poles become dangerous confederates. A painful experience results when one riding a motorcycle disregards a signpost warning to slow down to 35 mph to safely negotiate the next bend in the road. As a result of the impact of the Harley Davidson Sportster, the overhead wires swung to and fro until a short circuit knocked out electricity to the surrounding area. The steel frame of the Harley was twisted into a shape like a pretzel. Andy’s face had taken the brunt of the blunt force trauma when the...

A travel day customarily launches an out-of-town vacation week. When everything goes according to plan, our transportation connections line up perfectly and we easily leave behind all the workplace stresses. Having said that, reality may very well write for us a somewhat different story. These “vacation hiccups”, however uncomfortable, can provide for an adrenaline rush that multiplies the chances that future memories of this time away never fade. The basis of excellent storytelling is exactly this phenomenon. Having retired in Mexico a doze...

Abandoning his 20-year-old sports car which suffered from a serious oil leak at the San Francisco International Airport was Jeff’s first real step outside his home town. He decided to embark on a flight to the capital of America’s last frontier, a city which he researched years ago during a grade school homework assignment. After paying cash for his one-way ticket, he could only count on what remained in his wallet, a mere five hundred dollars. This freedom to get away from it all unfolded only after the brute realization that he and Maria w...

Reedsy Short Story: “Be Bold to Be Beautiful” by Odiseo Quintin It was difficult for Roger, the police rookie, not to feel overwhelmed upon his arrival at his assigned metropolitan precinct. The highways and surface streets he would patrol carried millions of drivers on a daily basis. But for having graduated first academically in his academy class of 140 cadets, he refused to be intimidated by the task at hand. Besides, he had an axe to grind. During his previous struggles with adolescence, the enmity from men wearing a badge provid...
